FutureGen Costs Cause DOE to Pull Support

ST. LOUIS -- The Energy Department is dropping support for the FutureGen project -- citing ballooning costs.

Two sites in Texas had been finalists for the emissions-free power plant, which was granted to Illinois.

DOE officials told federal lawmakers Tuesday it plans to pull its support for the $1.8 billion project.

The Department of Energy would not publicly divulge its intentions about FutureGen or discuss what was said during the private meeting with lawmakers.

An announcement is expected later this week.

Two sites in Texas - near Jewett and Odessa - were among the finalists for the project recently awarded to a site in Mattoon, Illinois.

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin says the state's congressional delegation will make the case for FutureGen directly to President Bush.
