Deadly storms swept across parts of the South Tuesday night. The sheriff of Pope County, Arkansas, says a tornado has killed three people.
The National Weather Service says a half-dozen tornadoes hit Tennessee and northern Mississippi with a chance for more in the forecast.
Memphis police say a few people took shelter under a bridge and were washed away but were pulled out of a river with minor scrapes. There were slight injuries at a Memphis mall that was damaged by powerful winds.
Later, the same storm system damaged a dorm at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. A school spokesman says eight students were trapped in a damaged dormitory but weren't seriously injured.
