The race for College Station City Council Place 5 was also heated, but Chris Scotti came out ahead by a large margin.

The local businessman garnered 64 percent of the vote (2,178 total votes). Marilyn Hooton finished a distant second with 24 percent.

Justin Whitworth scored just 10 percent of the vote. During his campaign, Whitworth had sent our fliers attacking Place 3 candidate Ron Gay, who was running against Robert Wareing and not Whitworth. The Eagle withdrew its recommendation for Whitworth as a result.

Phil Shakleford finished last in the four-person race.

Scotti says he expected a run off but says he's glad the voters made such a loud statement.

"It's been an amazing experience," he said Saturday night. "It's been very controversial. I started to learn how polarized folks were about some of the issues, and it's been a big learning experience. I'm happy to see it's come down this way, happy to see voters have spoken very clearly."
