A published report says dietary supplements containing ingredients forbidden to NCAA athletes were purchased by athletic departments at Texas A&M University and the University of Texas.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Monday that the schools spent nearly $120 thousand on twenty one products containing certain muscle-building ingredients and substances banned by the NCAA.

The purchases were made between fall of 2000 and spring of 2004.

A Texas A&M official said the school did not know banned substances were being purchased until it reviewed records requested by the newspaper.

A U.T. official said it is trying to see if purchases containing added amino acids, a banned muscle-building ingredient, were made in error.

One of products purchased by Texas A&M contains synephrine, a substance similar to ephedra, the stimulant that has been linked to more than 150 deaths and was taken off the shelves by the federal government in 2003.
