The largest public works project in Washington County has gotten the green light.
The Brenham City Council and Washington County Commissioners have signed a contract with the Texas Department of Transportation to add improvements to Highway 290.
The $38 million dollar project would relieve congestion to 2.5 miles of the highway by adding overpasses and one-way frontage roads.
The city and county will put up $15 million for the project and TxDot would fund the rest.
Then state will partially reimburse the two entities when the project is complete due to a pass through financing agreement. After the reimbursement, it's estimated the city and county will pay $3.5 million dollar, or about 10 percent of the total cost of the project.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2010.
