100 Homes and Counting

A milestone was reached this morning for one of the area's hardest working organizations.

Habitat for Humanity held a wall raising ceremony for their 100th home in the twin cities. The Bryan/College Station chapter was founded in 1989, and when Charamin Mendez and her three children move into this home, the group will have housed 434 people.

"It's a very emotional occasion for a lot of people," said local Habitat board president Hilda Phariss, "and it's a great accomplishment for people who have served as committee members, board members, donors, supporters, workers, everybody. It takes everybody to make everything happen."

The 100th home is scheduled to be completed in 10 to 12 weeks. Habitat has set the goal of building another 100 homes in the next five years.

""We have some other lots in the community, and we have another subdivision that we're looking to build," Phariss said. "We hope to move another 100 families out of substandard housing into simple, affordable housing."
