White House Critical of Newsweek

By: Associated Press

Saying an apology is not enough, the White House is calling on Newsweek to retract a story that alleged U.S. interrogators at Guantanamo Bay desecrated the Quran.

Accusations that interrogators flushed Islam's holy book down a
toilet sparked protests in Afghanistan that left 15 dead and scores injured.

Newsweek has acknowledged mistakes in the story. But White House
spokesman Scott McClellan says that's not good enough.

McClellan says the story "damaged" the image of the United States abroad and had "serious consequences." He says there's a
certain journalistic standard that should be met and that it hasn't
been in this case.

Newsweek says it will continue to investigate the matter.
