By: KBTX Staff

A suspect is in custody in connection with Wednesday's vicious attack on an elderly Bryan woman.

Bryan police arrested Phillip Bernard Hampton, 18, shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bryan Mental Health Mental Retardation facility on Mary Lake Drive. Hampton is charged with burglary of a habitation with intent to commit a felony which is a first degree felony offense.

Authorities say Hampton broke into the home of Carolyn Miller, 69, Wednesday morning, reportedly to steal her dog. Miller managed to call 911 moments before she was attacked, but the suspect fled before police arrived.

Miller remains at St. Joseph Regional Health Center where she's being treated for stab ones including one that severed her nose.

MHMR confirmed Hampton is not an employee of the facility, but would not say whether he is a client.
