Students at College ISD will return to class under new leadership this fall.
Dr. Jimmy Creel, has been chosen as the district's new superintendent to replace Dr. Steve Johnson whose last day is in September.
College Station ISD is turning the page on it's next chapter.
Six months of searching for a new superintendent has turned up Dr. Jimmy Creel...he says it's a dream come true.
"When you look at the high performance culture of this school district, you can bet there are some great people that are responsible for that. I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to join them, learn from them and to work with them," said Creel.
Creel comes from Katy ISD where he serves as deputy superintendent.
But it was his experience as a superintendent in Port Neches-Groves, that made him ideal for the top spot.
Not even 24 hours into the job yet, Creel already has goals in mind.
"We're going to have to manage growth, we're going to have to adapt to a changing environment, maybe some things that we don't even know yet. But we're going to have to be able to respond to those kinds of things. I think we've got a great foundation. I think we've got great people and I believe we'll be up to the challenge," said Creel.
For 34 years, Dr. Steve Johnson has been laying that foundation.
Under his leadership College Station managed a budget when the Robin Hood School finance plan took money away.
Johnson also built strong relationships with his staff and the community.
But come September he will step down and let another take the reigns.
"It's just the beginning of another chapter. 34 years of doing something is a long time and I still don't know what it's going to be like to wake up on Monday morning and not be here but I'm ready," said Johnson.
Creel is a 1974 graduate of Texas A&M. His career in education has taken him to four different districts.
But he says returning to Aggieland is a ''homecoming".
Creel and his wife, Cindy will make plans to move to College Station, where his two daughters are already attending Texas A&M.
