The sudden death of one of College Station's veteran police officers has shocked the department and the community.
Assistant Chief Mike Patterson died last night of a heart attack, and his department is coming together to cope.
Flags are at half-staff, and hearts are heavy at the College Station Police Department.
26-year-veteran and Assistant Chief of Police, Mike Patterson died of a heart attack Wednesday evening.
A great loss to everyone who knew him.
"The force of his personality and his ability to relate to people, I just don't know if we can ever capture that again," said CS Police Chief Michael Clancey.
Patterson began his career at CSPD in 1978 after spending a couple of years on the University Police Force.
His smile said it all -- Mike Patterson loved life.
"That was Mike -- The big smile but very intelligent and able to accomplish so much during his time with the College Station Police Department," said Chief Clancey.
Bryan Police Chief Mike Strope spent five years as College Station's chief
Strope says Patterson always had a keen sense of humor...and could relieve any stressful situation with a good joke.
But he also says Patterson had a deep sense of duty...and loved what he did.
"What I remember most about Mike Patterson is he had a strong passion for doing the right thing," said Chief Strope.
Strope says Patterson's impact has effected not only his own police force, but Bryan's.
The sister city says they'll do all they can to support College Station PD during this crisis.
"It's difficult and it brings back that life is sacred and a short thing. And we're not here for as long as we may think," said Chief Strope.
Mike Patterson was only 52, but he'll always be remembered for who he was during his time here.
Memorial services will be held this Saturday at noon at the A&M Consolidated High School auditorium.
The Bryan PD has offered to police College Station during the service.
