Former Baylor basketball player Carlton Dotson was sentenced to 35 years Wednesday morning the summer 2003 murder of former teammate Patrick Dennehy.
Dotson had pleaded guilty unexpectedly to the murder a week ago. The 23 year-old former player had faced from five years to life in prison for the slaying of the 21 year-old Dennehy.
Dennehy was missing for six weeks before his body was found in
field a few miles from campus in July 2003.
State District Judge Ralph Strother assessed the punishment based on documents filed by prosecutors and defense attorneys. According to prosecutors' report, Dotson had told FBI agents he thought people were trying to kill him because "he is Jesus, the son of God."
