Brazos Valley Burn Bans: The following counties are under a Burn Ban: Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Houston, Lee, Leon, Madison, Milam, Robertson, San Jacinto, Trinity, Walker, Washington
So just how safe were Brazos Valley roadways over the Fourth of July holiday? DPS stayed very busy and believes it did its part to keep traffic incidents low.
State troopers spent the long holiday weekend stepping up to keep roadways safe. It was part of the CARE program, which stands for combined accident reduction efforts. DPS Sgt. Mark Spillers says it worked.
"Our visibility does tend to slow people down and make them cautious about their driving skills. Seeing multiple troopers along the roadway keeps the good behavior re-enforced and you have better driving for a longer distance," said Spillers.
Troopers in Brazos County alone stopped 325 vehicles, 231 tickets were issued, 100 were for speeding, and 11 DWI arrests were made. DPS troopers worked two fatalities this weekend, one in Madison County, the other in Leon.
“Alcohol is almost a factor in nearly every wreck that we have over the holidays during the summer because so many people go to areas where alcohol is involved and then they operate their motor vehicles later," said DPS Senior Trooper, Eddie Carmon.
DPS says major traffic accidents over July 4 in our area have gone down from previous years and hope to continue that trend.
In other police activity over the holiday, Bryan police responded to 21 accidents. College Station police made a handful of DWI arrests. And both departments received several calls about fireworks and noise violations.
Walker County Sheriff's Department filed 124 charges for various offenses over the four-day holiday period.
