School Will Start Without New Textbooks

School is starting up in less than a week and some Brazos Valley teachers are scrambling for instructional materials. Textbooks that were supposed to be used this school year have not arrived. That's because of a legislative delay to pay for the books for Texas schools.

"We're in the same boat as everybody else. There are books sitting in publishers warehouses waiting to be delivered and we can't get them until the state comes up with the funding for them," says Sandy Farris with Bryan ISD.

The delayed textbooks cover foreign language, physical education, fine arts and health. Bryan ISD plans to use the older textbooks until the new ones arrive.

Because health issues have changed over the course of a decade, health teachers are having to rely on the internet to find current material for their classes.

"The state okays funding, the funding goes to corporation to ship us material, naturally we have to process all those materials and that all takes time in order to get into teachers hand. Teachers need to be familiar with the material in order to teach it to kids," says BISD Service Coordinator.

But it is teachers who must accommodate the best way they can. The lack of funding for textbooks could make for one long school year for teachers and students.
