NEW YORK (AP) - Come Monday, New York State will have a new
Eliot Spitzer will be succeeded by a fellow Democrat, Lieutenant
Governor David Paterson.
In a startlingly swift fall from grace, Spitzer resigned
Wednesday after getting caught in a call-girl scandal that made a
mockery of his straight-arrow image. He faces the prospect of
criminal charges and perhaps disbarment.
He resigned without securing a plea bargain with federal
prosecutors, though he reportedly is negotiating one.
Investigators say Spitzer arranged for a prostitute named
Kristen to travel from New York to Washington where he was
testifying before a congressional subcommittee.
The New York Times reports Kristen's real name is Ashley
Alexandra Dupre. She told the Times she doesn't want to be thought
of as a "monster" and that she's going through "a very difficult
