Voters Approve New Schools for Hearne

By: KBTX Staff

The Hearne Independent School District just got a big boost from voters. They said yes to a $14 million bond proposal that will create a new junior high, combine two elementary schools and build a new gymnasium.

The results Saturday were much different than last May's identical proposal. The bond election was defeated by only 20 votes two months ago. Saturday, it was approved by 182 votes, with 553 voting for the bond, and 371 voting against it.

The superintendent credits a volunteer effort to get the word out.
Construction could begin in weeks, and much of the project could be completed by the beginning of next school year.

Homeowners can expect to pay another $100 a year in school taxes.
