Across the country, gas prices have affected consumer spending. At a time when many retailers nationwide aren't faring well, at least one type of store is selling a whole lot more than last year. Even though shoppers may not go as often.

Heather Hardcastle is shopping for a crowd. "There's four of us in the house. Five dogs, four cats, and one bird," said Hardcastle.

One of the most important family members is the newest addition, Hardcastle's 19-month-old granddaughter.

"As you can tell, a lot of stuff in here is for Alyna, forget about granny," joked Hardcastle.

Since gas prices have gone up, this Hearne family is cutting back trips to the local grocery store, and stocking up at Sam's Club in College Station, more often.

"A lot more because usually we would come over here every four to five months," said Hardcastle.

Her family isn't alone. At a time when the nation's economic growth rate is nearly stagnant, sales at bulk retailers like Sam's Club and Costco are up.

More shoppers say they're choosing to stock up, in order to make fewer trips.

"I used to make several little trips, but now I can't afford to. Just on Fridays, and sometimes not even every Friday. Just whenever I can," said shopper Wanda Waldrep.

After a little help from her granddaughter, Heather and company make it to the checkout line.

"This will last us a month and then we'll start all over again next month," said Harcastle.
