Brazos County Limits Number of Evacuees

By: KBTX Staff

Brazos County has capped the number of Katrina evacuees it will accept at Red Cross shelters.

Local law enforcement has determined the county can safely maintain and secure only 1,000 residents at the five shelters.

Bryan Police Chief Michael Strope said, "Those individuals above and beyond what we can affectively handle and process, we will refer them to our north and west to other cities such as Waco and Austin."

At least one police officer will be stationed at each shelter. The estimated cost for additional medical and police resources needed for the evacuees is $7,500 a day.

Evacuees will be directed to the Brazos Center in Bryan where they will be registered and then sent to the local shelters.
