CAPITOL HILL (AP) - Executives from the big five oil companies
will appear before Congress today to answer questions about how
they're raking in big profits while consumers are being hammered at
the pump.
Irving-based Exxon Mobil and Houston-based Shell, BP America and
Conoco-Phillips joined California-based Chevron in earning a
combined 123 billion dollars last year because of rising prices.
The House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global
Warming wants to know why, with such big profits, the oil industry
is trying to hold on to 18 billion dollars in tax breaks.
The oil companies have argued that they need the tax breaks for
continued investment in exploration, production and refinery
expansion. Lawmakers say the profits they're making should be
enough incentive.
The House has approved legislation to end the tax breaks but it
hasn't made it through the Senate. President Bush has threatened to
veto any such bill that does.

It is all about supply and demand. The oil companies have the supply and they demand we pay for it.

"One question to ask Did you get a tax break when you do your Income tax?" I got the notice that I WILL be getting one...I thought everybody did. And supposedly a lot of these tax breaks and rebates are tied to switching to renewable energy sources, kind of like the folks who buy Hybrids, which unfortunately I can't afford...

One question to ask Did you get a tax break when you do your Income tax? It's like the old saying "The rich(oil companies) get richer and the poor get poorer!!!!!!!!!!!

One question for the press: is that 123B Gross or Net earnings, and is it before or after taxes? For example, if I were to buy a $1000 worth of widgets in Houston, spend $50 in gas to get them here, and then sell them for $1100 after paying the City $40 in local "franchise" taxes, then using the same rules you used to calculate the oil company earnings, would you report my earnings as $1100, $100, $50, or the $10 I actually get to keep? If the 123B = the $10, then they're gouging us; but if that 123B is the $1100, then YOU'RE the ones we should be ticked at...

If the "tree-huggers" and the "wild animal" lovers would would loosen up maybe the oil companies would consider building new refineries to help lessen the cost of gas. Supply and Demand still lives today in AMERICA!!!!!!

If these companies are making $123 BILLION, why are we still paying such crazy prices at the pump?
