Lake authorities confirm the boy caught the illness during a Labor day camping trip. He began to show symptoms a few days after leaving the Burleson County Lake. His family took him to a hospital in Rockdale, where he was transferred to a children's hospital in Austin.
The ameba that causes the meningoencephalitis is in almost every lake, but it's extremely rare a human will catch the sickness. The ameba thrives when temperatures are higher. Most cases happen in July and August. Infections, though are extremely rare, and usually occur when water levels are lower and when water is stagnant.
