Earlier this week, News 3 told you about the alcohol license approved for a racetrack to be built in the Brazos County community of Edge.

Now it appears some people who live near the racetrack, aren't ready to give up the fight.

Attorney Wayne Rife says he'll meet Tuesday night with residents opposed to the alcohol license. The meeting is set for 7:30 at the Edge Community Center.

Rife says they'll discuss possible future legal options. A similar meeting in February drew a crowd of about 200.

Rife says he's currently representing 28 Edge residents, some of whom have formed the Greater Edge Homeowners and Landowners Protection Group.

Why don't the people in Edge help Wayne get Hot Rod Hill back open and this will all go away. I keep hearing that the guy who was opposing Wayne has moved away so why is it not open. If you are not a dirt track fan, then you are not going to want a dirt track in your neighborhood. I have been driving dirt cars for 25 years now, hell they can put it in my backyard, I could get rid of my 9 miles to the gallon dually.

Posted by: Edge resident Location: edge on Apr 11, 2008 at 11:55 PM
Look people I could care less how much money he is investing in the project, I have my own, don,t need nothing of his. They are called dirt track cars for a reason, they are the nascar wanna be, take your track some where else, I want my property value to remain where it is, not go down. I did not buy this much land this far out to listen to this kind of noise, If you want the track so bad, put it in your back yard.

Looks like the Hillbilly Okie Dokes are still going at it. Some things never change. Here you have a person that is investing a substantial sum of money in a project that will benefit the community and some don't want it. Go figure.

Posted by: Fred Location: Edge on Apr 11, 2008 at 12:06 PM
Huh? We must not be afraid of change.

Posted by: Resident Location: Edge on Apr 10, 2008 at 10:30 AM
To the Former Edge Inhabitant: Thank goodness you are no longer here! We don't need a lot of money...we are just fine the way we are!

what happen in the meeting? ___________________________ Have you seen this? I wish there were more companies like this out there that were interested in making a difference! http://www.aboveallopportunities.com/100.html

To the Former Edge Inhabitant:What a large head you must have now that you have moved away from all the small minds in this small town that has 2 stores, (wow) this community is going to make a killing off that race track when they flock to those two places. A small mind is still in your future, quit trying it only makes me laugh.

Posted by: Former Edge Inhabitant Location: Houston on Apr 9, 2008 at 11:07 AM
It is absurd to think someone would want to interfere with free enterprise. This racetrack will bring a lot of money to the area. Small towns usually have a lot of small minds. I lived in Edge as a child and left because of people that think like this.

Does anyone know why this place is showing to be for sale?

Posted by: Charles Location: Edge on Apr 9, 2008 at 08:13 AM
Many of us have resided in the the northern part of Brazos county most of our life. We enjoy the peace and somewhat slower pace of life out here. We are not dumb, stupid or immature(please note this Robin). There are many professional people among the residents in the area. There are also many retired residents who don't want the additional traffic or the noise and pandomium that a racetrack and bar would bring to the area. We are not trying to stop anyone from earning a living or doing what they want to with "their land or property". The area designated for the proposed racetrack is not in an an isolated area. There are many homes within close proximity. If the people of Carlos or Iola or any other community desire to race, then ask Mr. Lyne to build his racetrack near their home or community. I imagine that there will be just as many complaints to it being built there. If a racetrack is so important to these people build it yourself and have it near your home!!! Not in EDGE !

To "Property Owner": A jury of your peers made the decision - the right decision. Apparently any appeals did not succeed either as the track is still closed. I think the jury agreed with nearby homeowners because they were there before the track was built. The owner should have known the risks of putting such a disruptive enterprise too close to existing residences. Now, if the track had been built first, miles away from any houses, and then people built houses nearby afterwards, then the jury should have sided with the owner, as the homeowners should have know the risks of living nearby the track. In this case, the people of Edge were there long before any silly track.

How in the heck did he file bankruptcy and still hold onto his land? Isn't that like ILLEGAL?? Or at the very least improper? or unethical? or something? Oh, that's right, we are talking about Lyne... And the good old boy system. Makes perfect sense now. Duh.....And the last I heard he was living in a boat or under it or something...The rest of us have houses which are TAXED - are you listening Appraisal District?

**Don't forget the meeting tonight at 7:30 EDGE COMMUNITY CENTER**

Posted by: Anon Location: Tabor/Edge Community on Apr 8, 2008 at 08:29 AM
I can't understand why everyone has to stop someone when they try to better the area. There is NOTHING to do in this town for anyone except go to the bars and NOTHING to do for families. When Hot Rod Hill was open, my boys would get so excited every race weekend. We went as a family. Now, someone is trying not to mention already spend lots of $$$'s, to bring fun, wholesome family entertainment to the area and everyone is against it. I know that we are "in the country". But come on now, how long is that going to last? Just look at the Wellborn area how it once was country and now it's in the city. Communities grow. With the cost of things now days, it's hard to make a living. FOR ANYONE. Let's be supportive of this facility, it will be better than you think.

I know Barrett Lyne, have for a long time, This is just another way for him to get investors money in his pocket and the drop the deal. Also it has nothing to do with the drinking as much as the noise, and devaluing the property of owners like me, we move out this far to enjoy the peace, so much for that. Why doesn't he use the land he inherited for something like cattle or farming like all the other land owners in this area, wait thats work, something most americans don't want anything to with in todays time, they want it all handed to them.

Posted by: A Rat in the Location: of Brazos County Court House on Apr 7, 2008 at 11:24 PM
Barret Lyne is not trying to control the amount of alcohol fans will consume, he is trying to control where they purchase it for his profit! He does't love the land, he loves the money he can make by the sacrifice of the land and at the expense of his neighbors. Last I knew he was living out of motels and a pickup. He doesn't even live on the land in Edge. Mr. Lyne filed for bankruptcy in the last five years to avoid debts he owed, check it out, it's public record in the Brazos County Court House. I hear him and Judge Sims go way back. I bet Judge Sims supports this kind of activity because they are old cronies. I suspect there are all kinds of links between these two. Individuals who play the good ol'boy system, file bankruptcy to avoid debts, and have no regard for their neighbor have no morals or integrity. Judge Sims held the protest hearing at the most inconvenient time for the citizens of Brazos County and still had over 200 people show up, and he didn't listen to the facts. Shame

Posted by: Property Owner Location: Madisonville on Apr 7, 2008 at 08:50 PM
UMMM no Bill I do not see. Your logic is full of holes just because the owner of HOT ROD hill was stopped does not mean the decision was correct.

Posted by: Tommy Location: Bryan on Apr 7, 2008 at 07:57 PM
Randy Sims did the job he was elected to do. No laws were violated by Mr. Lyne and the TABC could not find reason not to issue the license. Just because a protest was filed does not automatically mean that the opposing party will get their way. He followed the law and that's all he could do. As far as noise goes I challenge you to go for a night of racing in Willis. Go see 1st hand just how loud it really is and how many people are drinking beyond their limits.(You can ride with me if you want) I don't think that you will find anything out of the norm, or at least I hope not cause I haven't seen it. And while you're there please cheer for a local boy driving the T27 Hobby Stock...lol Thanks, Tommy Garcia

I don't live out there, but it's a bad idea. There was a huge hooplah about the new Hooters liquor license but not the race track. That's the biggest problem with Brazos county not everyone has their head on straight.

Posted by: dont worry Location: cs tx on Apr 7, 2008 at 06:09 PM
I doubt he has sourced all this out, the complete cost of this dream. the racing support. these car owners expect to win money to pay expenses or they dont show. he has to desinate a certian amount of acres for commerical business that is not tax exempt. lots of hidden taxes and cost. they only race a few months a year. some body has comvinced this guy to race down a wrong road so to speak. if the track isnt just right the drive/owner say goodby.

Posted by: Bill Location: Brazos County on Apr 7, 2008 at 04:05 PM
To "property owner" who posted on Apr 7 at 2:20PM. Your statement that "the man next door has a right to make money off his property" is obviously true (i.e., farmers, ranchers, etc.). However, it is not a universally true statement (i.e., drugs, brothels, dogfighting, etc.). Add excessively loud tracks with races until 1:00AM to that list. Just ask the owner of Hot Rod Hill. Private property doesn't necessarily equate to total freedom to do whatever you want if it affects other people negatively. See now?

Posted by: Property Owner Location: Madisonville on Apr 7, 2008 at 02:20 PM
Private property is just that PRIVATE PROPERTY. If the people around it do not like it make the owner a better offer. It belongs to him. Trust me the lawyer is in this for the money. This is simple economics. The man next door has a right to make money off his property.

I doubt Barrett Lyons has sense enough to know what end you put gas in a race car.I think the birds in his refuge have picked his brains out what few he had.

Posted by: Joe Location: Madison county on Apr 7, 2008 at 12:42 PM
Aside from the race track, having a liquor license will not destroy the area. They said Madison county would go to hell if they voted in beer and wine. Now there are less drunk drivers in the county because they don't drive to Walker or Brazos county, buy their beer and drink all the way back to Madisonville. DUIs have not gone up! The only ones to benefit from this will be the Money Vultures! (OOPS, lawyers)

" you can`t fight city hall." I have heard that since i was a boy, it`s true. Randy Sims and comissioners smell money. They don`t care about people in this county. Remember this at election time. They have to pay there salaries.

To PLAY-UH: what is the difference in Edge and Northgate? Hmmm, let me see...Northgate is in walking distance to TAMU and many apartments, in the city limits, already established restaurants and bars...Edge is in the country. Period. And I have really read ALL the facts, such as they are...Really now!! You people are a trip. Really now!

Posted by: John Location: Carlos on Apr 7, 2008 at 12:28 PM
The racetrack in question should not really be anybodys problem. Who ever owns that land should have the right to do anything he wants. People need to mind their own business. Everything changes....If you don't like the situation just pack your bags.

Posted by: Play-uh Location: Edge, TX on Apr 7, 2008 at 11:52 AM
Congratulations Judge Randy Sims for having the courage to speak up and do something other than what the majority wants! Has anybody really read the facts? What's the difference between this and someone getting a license in Northgate? Really now!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Edge on Apr 7, 2008 at 11:45 AM
To John- This would not surprise me in the least!

Posted by: Carla Location: Edge on Apr 7, 2008 at 11:35 AM
I am sure that there maybe some in favor of the track but not very many...The people you are refering to in EDGE that need to "grow up" are grown up and like the "peace and quite" of our country living...If this track comes in the peace and quite as we know it now will be do more...I understand people want a place to go to race but why in EDGE...if all the people that want this track so bad will stop and think about it for a second...I don't think they would want it in their backyard or neigborhood either... Why not take the track to the river bottom...Brazos or Navasot... The ATV Ranch does not seem to bother anyone...You are distrupting the COUNTRY and we don't like it!

Posted by: Edge resident Location: EDGE on Apr 7, 2008 at 11:21 AM
To Robin - we are grown ups. What is up with all the insults that keep getting thrown out at us? Just because we live in the country does not automatically mean that we are ignorant. I know that accidents can happen anywhere, anytime - just as there are many drinking drivers on the road anywhere and at anytime. But why invite the POSSIBILITY of it to a community that does not want it? The other blog had insults to people who are concerned about their children and insinuated that those kids were drinking just because they would be driving home late. HELLO? Has anyone heard of a JOB that might keep these kids out late, especially on the weekends? If you are a waiter/waitress (probably the most common job for a teenager) and work til the end of your shift and help clean up, then you will be coming home late - NOT necessarily because you have been out drinking. Good grief!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Bryan on Apr 7, 2008 at 11:09 AM
I have been reading the posted comments over the last few weeks. Is there anyone in favor of this track that actually lives in the community it will be built in?

Posted by: Edge resident Location: EDGE on Apr 7, 2008 at 09:49 AM
Folks - Just remember in the speakout poll today (whether Judge Sims should have granted the TABC license), all of these out of towners can vote as many times as they want - JUST LIKE MANY DID WHEN TOMMY G. WAS TRYING TO QUALIFY FOR "RACING FOR A LIVING". The reason I know this is that I voted for him MANY times so he could pursue his dream. My dream is to live in the peace and quiet of the beautiful Edge country life that we all love and not have a racetrack and the traffic it will bring imposing on us. There are lots of other tracks. GO AND RACE AT THEM!

Posted by: john Location: College Station on Apr 7, 2008 at 07:44 AM
Hope the attornies aren't in cahoots playing both ends against the middle, planning to walk away with half a mil each from the residents as well as the track owner.

Posted by: Robin Location: Bryan on Apr 7, 2008 at 06:45 AM
I do believe that the people of EDGE need to grow up. Accidents can happen anywhere anytime, just because there is a race track in the community doesnt mean that everyone will be drinking!! We have to take our money to Willis to go race and i think that a local track will be better and bring money to the local community. I pray that this can be resolved soon and that we can here the word that the TRACK IS OPEN!!! WE WILL BE THERE EVERY WEEK-END!!!!

Posted by: clay on Apr 7, 2008 at 06:01 AM
give em hell,i think you are jumping the gun though, because you will hurt him worse after he spends all his money on the track and starts making all that racket, just call the tree huggers and tell them he's upsetting a few birds and they will shut him down so fast it will make his head spin.only an idiot would think he could have a race track and a bird refuge on the same site.this guy is a world class whacko.
