All motorists should avoid Highway 6 South due to extreme congestion. Highway 6 is backed up to Bryan/College Station from Highway 290 with no fuel available in Hempstead or into Houston. Area residents and visitors are advised not to travel south on Highway 6.
Power outages and electrical safety tips
Volunteers are needed to staff shelters. If you would like to help please go to the volunteer center at the Center for Regional Services on 29th street to register. In the event Brazos Valley experiences severe weather, officials may lock down shelters restricting evacuees and volunteers from leaving.
31 shelters are housing 7,948 evacuees. Most shelters are at or near capacity with several others poised and ready to come on line as needed.

Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church
A Red Cross Shelter who has taken in approx. 75 evacuees needs help. There are no stores open in Huntsville to purchase supplies. Anyone able to donate can foods, water, toilet paper, paper towels, tea bags, juice, snacks, shampoos, towels, etc please contact:

Supply trucks are not able to reach Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church until possibly Monday.
The Brazos Animal Shelter reports a great need for people to feed the small animals sheltered at the Louis Pearce Pavilion, as well as clean cages, crates, carriers, etc. Volunteers may either contact the animal shelter office at 775-5755 or simply show up at Louis Pearce Pavilion, located in College Station on George Bush Drive between Wellborn Road and FM-2818.
There is an immediate need for volunteers who can perform the following:
- Off-load trucks
- Use their vehicles -- car, truck, van, or something larger -- to help shuttle things to and from shelters
- Assist at emergency facilities, such as the Gateway Reception Center
Those willing to volunteer should register at the Volunteer Center, located at the Brazos Valley Council of Governments office, 3991 East 29th Street in Bryan. They also can be reached at (979) 595-2800, ext. 2315.

Texas Disaster Relief Fund
AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today announced the establishment of the Texas Disaster Relief Fund to help provide immediate assistance to citizens in need.
“Texans’ generosity and compassion is as large as our great state, and the Texas Disaster Relief Fund will help provide immediate assistance to Texans affected by Hurricane Rita,” Gov. Perry said. “Contributions, no matter the size, will directly help our neighbors and communities recover in the aftermath of this storm.”

- batteries, flashlights, radio
- fill up gas tank because once electricity is out, you will not be able to get gas
- Store non-perishable, packaged foods which will not require preparation or cooking.
