Out of five candidates for College Station's vacant police chief opening, Michael Ikner has been selected to lead the department.

The assistant chief in Arlington, Texas heads up the field operations bureau in that city, but will take the reins of CSPD starting June 2.

"I am absolutely ecstatic about it," Ikner told News 3. "I feel honored and absolutely blessed to get this awesome responsibility to take over the helm of a fine organization like the College Station Police Department and the professionals that work there."

Ikner has been Arlington's assistant chief since 2004.

"We had five outstanding candidates short listed for this position," City Manager Glenn Brown said in a city press release. "It was a challenging decision. However, Michael has more than 20 years experience, 11 of which have been in the command level. Plus, he has demonstrated vision and professionalism while working for a large, accredited law enforcement agency located within a university community."

Interim CSPD Chief Bobby Whitmire, who was among the five finalists for the job, will leave that role on April 30. Assistant Chief Scott McCollum will act as chief until Ikner's arrival.

"The city is extremely grateful to Bobby for all that he did for the department during this interim phase," said Assistant City Manager Kathy Merrill in a press release. "We were fortunate to have his leadership during this transition." Until Ikner begins as the new Police Chief, Assistant Police Chief Scott McCollum will serve as acting Police Chief.

Ikner, who has a wife of 22 years and three children, holds degrees from the University of Texas at Arlington and Dallas Baptist University. He also has graduated from the FBI National Academy.

Chief Free was working in 2001 I talked with him. I also talked with the new chief that replaced him Chief Burton in 2001 After Chief Burton I talked with Chief Strope about a city issue 2005. Never talked with Chief Whitmere but remember the city council meeting about using a temporary Chief in 2007.My wife talked with the new Chief Morrow and also my sister in 2007 he is a good man. I may be getting old but I worked with some of the chiefs that have been in Bryan. ROBS is correct 5. The count may look high do to many veteran officers moving on during this time. Others veteran officers from investigation to night patrol and motorcycle patrol 2001-2007.

Chief Inker please rent a house for the first year.

"Did any of the above not hold the title as police chief and get paid as POLICE CHIEF for BRYAN FROM 2001-2007?" That's not what you said the first time; you said that going in ONE TIME PER YEAR, you'd have seen all of them, but in 2007, you'd have seen either Whitmere OR Morrow, but not both of them. And, as I mentioned, Whitmere made few (if any) changes...although even 4 chiefs in 8 years is (as you point out) a lot of stress on the department.

Lets count 1.Chief Free 2.Chief Burton 3. Chief Strope 4.Chief Whitmere 5.Chief Morrow. Did any of the above not hold the title as police chief and get paid as POLICE CHIEF for BRYAN FROM 2001-2007?

"If you walked into BPD one time a year from 2000 to 2007 and asked to see the chief you would talk with 5 different chiefs at BPD." Not true; Burton was there for 2 years and Strope for 4. Whitmere was only there for half a year just treading water waiting for the permanent replacement. No disrespect to Whitmere, but the reason he didn't get picked as the permanent chief in either department was that he didn't want to make any changes that a possible successor would undo, which made both selection committees see him as a waffler.

If you walked into BPD one time a year from 2000 to 2007 and asked to see the chief you would talk with 5 different chiefs at BPD. I had no idea things have been so bad since 2000 at BPD. Why the high turn over since 2000-2007? I also think it look like 5-chiefs in this decade and decade is not over. How many patrol officers and Adm.personal have moved on in the 2000-2007? Thank you for the info. ROB. I did not have any idea about the high turn over at BPD. I have had some poor service from BPD in this time frame. This explains a lot now. It must be difficult working with a new Adm. all the time. Keeping up with new police policy changes, with ever new chief must be difficult and lower some police services in some areas. I plan to talk with some city council members about the working condition, turn over, and pay for the BPD.

First things he needs to do is place more emphasis on officer safety and get them off those motorcycles and in to cars before they get killed. Far too many officers are killed in accidents on motorcycles that would have been survivable had they been in a car. The motorcycles are harder to see and offer no protection at all in a collision. The small amount of money saved at purchase and in fuel does not justify the risk.

Did a bad guy take a gun from a BPD officer and point it at 3 Bryan Police officers and run off with the police officer gun-A few years back? When Bryan was looking for a new chief? I think the Eagle reported it.

Posted by: Rob Location: Bryan on Apr 22, 2008 at 05:45 PM
I don't know where 8 chiefs from Bryan are coming from? According to my memory since I work there, Chief Freeman served 1993-2001. Chief Burton from 2001-2003. Chief Strope 2003-2007 and Whitmere as an interm chief for 5 months before the appointment of the current chief in Sept. 2007. Looks like 5 since 1993? What do you think.

Posted by: None on Apr 22, 2008 at 05:30 PM
I S0 agree with you John! Starting with Clancey- we had three other 'high profile' city leaders (Parks Mgmt.etc) suddenly 'retire'..I think some people employed with the City are finally getting a clue that our current City MGR. and Asst.City Mgr. do not work well with others and only see things THEIR way!

Posted by: Ed Location: Bryan on Apr 22, 2008 at 05:17 PM
BPD's problems magnified with a "new chief" from Arlington a few years ago; geographical policing; and the appointment of two Assistants with no prior experience. I hope CS isn't making the same mistakes.

Posted by: kay Location: cs on Apr 22, 2008 at 11:52 AM
he will last maybe a year...needs to stay where he is.

Posted by: john Location: College Station on Apr 22, 2008 at 05:53 AM
"Give this Chief some help City MGR." Dream on. The whole reason Clancey quit was that when he split the beats so that it wouldn't take half an hour just to get from one end of a beat to the other, the city manager told him he wasn't getting any more officers to man them, even though the City was going to annex a bunch MORE territory.

We need to get some of the response times down on robberies. I have a business in Bryan and CS. BPD Times are very poor. The times in CS is a little slower then 5-years ago. We are now are getting a lot of the Bryan type of crime in CS. True CSPD has done some good police work in the past. BPD also did years ago. University Dr has had almost ever motel armed robbed in the last few years. It goes on all the time in Bryan, but it is now working it way into CS. I have been in 2 robberies myself, had one Emp.shot. also in Bryan. In the middle of the day looked out the window after hearing a gun shot on Texas ave. Bryan. To see a person shot at a car wash. Bryan has had one police chief after a other in 8yrs. Now CS is started down the same road. Lets keep the crime out of CS. We do not need a new chief ever year are so like Bryan. Give this Chief some help City MGR. We do not need to be like Bryan.

good decision

Posted by: jerry Location: college station on Apr 18, 2008 at 11:21 AM
I have yet to hear any of our "illustrous" city leaders (appointed or elected) about how they intend to bring about more core services to provide for the recent annexation of land and homes. In regards to police protection-how many more vehicles will be needed, police officers, support staff, etc. to respond to calls in a very timely fashion. Hopefully, our city leaders have assured our new Chief just how this will be handled to insure confidence to the taxpayers of College Station.

Posted by: M Z Location: Arlington on Apr 18, 2008 at 09:13 AM
I have worked with Chief Ikner for 3 years. Chief Ikner's acceptance to become the new Chief of Police in College Station is a gain for your city but a loss for our department. His departure will not only be felt by our department but by our city as well. Chief Ikner is a professional individual who dedicates his heart and mind to his job. His great sense of humor allows anyone to feel at ease around him. He is one who gets results and those that are under his umbrella will reap the benefits of those results. Congrats to you and your family, Chief, and I know that you will do well. Also, congrats to you, College Station for choosing the best person for the job. You won't be disappointed.

Posted by: Kris Location: Arlington on Apr 18, 2008 at 09:04 AM
Congratulations Chief! College Station is gaining an incredibly professional and highly-respected man - Michael Ikner. Being one of his support staff, I can say he will be deeply missed by many in Arlington. We will do our best to continue his legacy of integrity, honesty, respect, and professionalism.

Posted by: None on Apr 18, 2008 at 09:00 AM
Very well said John! The officers on duty in College Station are the finest, however, they are not the problem. The problem lies within the City Mgmt. How can you run a PD when your Mgmt. fights you on every move you make. I am sure that Ikner will come into the PD with all sorts of great ideas, etc. but I am sure that actually getting them 'passed' by the Mgmt. will be a different story..Mgmt. needs to focus their attention to the problems (streets, bringing in new retail and restaurants, etc.) in the city instead of trying to 'run' others depts.

Posted by: Ann Location: Mansfield on Apr 18, 2008 at 08:59 AM
We've known Chief Ikner for about 5 years now, and he's simply the best! Arlington is losing a really good man. We are so excited for this opportunity for him, his family, and for College Station - but we are sad to see him leave. Congratulations and my God continue to bless you, Chief!

Posted by: Diane Location: Arlington, Texas on Apr 18, 2008 at 08:57 AM
Chief Ikner is one of Arlington's finest and we hate to loose him. I would hope that C.S. citizens/police dept./ and city officials will appreciate the experience and expertise Chief Ikner is bringing to C.S. Chief Ikner is a very fair, open and honest man. Arlington is loosing a great person. I have to agree with Mark's comment "he will be the last man standing".

Posted by: Julie Location: Arlington on Apr 18, 2008 at 08:55 AM
Arlington's loss is College Station's gain! Chief Ikner is a strong leader who is deeply respected by officers, peers and superiors. He is a man of principle who has great reverence for tradition, high expectations for excellence, and a vision for the future. He also has a great sense of humor! We will miss him.

Posted by: john Location: College Station on Apr 18, 2008 at 05:31 AM
"Any C.S. police staff that are not serious about protecting the community will be gone long before Chief Ikner moves on." It's not the cops that are the problem; the problem is the City Council/Manager who told Clancey that they were annexing the world and not increasing the size of the force (which was ALREADY too small to adequately cover the area we had).

Posted by: Mark on Apr 17, 2008 at 11:28 PM
Your new chief is my brother-n-law. This guy is very tought; mentally and physically. He is not coming to College Station to fail. Any C.S. police staff that are not serious about protecting the community will be gone long before Chief Ikner moves on. To be frank, He will be the Last Man Standing!

Posted by: jerry Location: college station on Apr 17, 2008 at 09:16 PM
Hopefully, this chief will stay around long enough to put a "real bite" in the crime-mainly assualts being committed in College Station by a small group of folks that seem to have nothing else to do. Surely he was made aware of, told or shown who these "characters" are that have been arrested and charged with these crimes. Good luck to him in dealing with the CSPD.

Posted by: None on Apr 17, 2008 at 09:15 PM
Lets just hope the City officials don't run this Chief off!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: CS on Apr 17, 2008 at 08:09 PM
I hope this chief makes it past 1 yr. we are getting to look like bryan on crime. The last chief did a good job. We will be like Bryan on crime and number of police chiefs in 8 yrs if he does not work out.

Posted by: nicole Location: CST on Apr 17, 2008 at 03:03 PM
awesome!

Posted by: great Location: cs on Apr 17, 2008 at 03:00 PM
Now let him hire 12 new officers and 6 new cars. I think other departments have way to many trucks. 3 employees show up at a sight in 3 different new 4 door trucks. 2 watch 1 do the work while they all visit for an hour. yeah they did.
