A shooting on the campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville had portions of the school on lockdown.

No one was injured in the shooting, which according to a university official, took place around 9 p.m. Thursday night near the middle of campus in what is known as the Pit area at a large student gathering.

The Pit is located between the administration and Farrington buildings.

According to Frank Krystyniak with the university, an individual took a gun out and fired at least one shot into the air.

No one was injured, though a shop and a computer lab near the shooting were locked down as a result.

The threat, according to Krystyniak, was over by around 10 p.m.

The university's police department was unwilling to release any information Thursday night despite repeated calls.

Classes will go on as scheduled Friday according to Krystyniak.

Mr. Krystyniak reports in this interview that the SHSU campus went on lock down. In the Huntsville Item he reports that the University Library went on lock down. I was working the Duty Desk in the Library at the time of the shooting. It was reported to me by concerned students. UPD did not call. I called them and they would give me no information. All that they said was "do not lock down the building." I asked them to call us back when things calmed down. We never heard anything else and they never visited the building. It concerns me to know that they reportedly searched the campus for the suspect for an hour after this. It also upsets me to know that they are informing the media of locking down buildings that they never bothered contacting or giving any information to. I understand that this is PR Mr. Krystyniak, but if you feel it is necessary to report that UPD did lock down certain buildings, the fact that they specifically told me not to do so is troubling.

This could have been another Virginia Tech. Now is the time to change our laws and allow individuals with a concealed handgun license to carry on college campuses. To do otherwise leaves our students at the mercy of crazed killers and a small university police force that lacks the training and manpower to be efficient and effective. UPD means well but their firearms have been limited by politically correct department heads. The officers over there are carrying an old, out of date, Smith and Wesson 9mm that is as heavy as a boat anchor and not very reliable. The ammunition in it is a 147 grain JHP that was abandoned by every major police department in America after numerous shootings in which it failed to stop an assailant fast enough. Even a large police department with the latest in technology and equipment is not usually ready for something like this. The student is responsible for his or her own personal safety. They need to be allowed to carry on campus.
