A&M Cuts Transportation Jobs

Video will be available shortly

Twenty-eight employees with Texas A&M Transportation Services are looking for new jobs. The university touted cost cutting as the reason for Wednesday's layoffs, saying they will save $1 million a year.

In total, 33 positions within the department have been eliminated, but five of them were vacant when the reorganization took place. Transporation Services will now employ 110 individuals, with nine positions vacant as of now.

"We are certainly aware of the adverse impact that this reorganization has on all Transportation Services' employees, and we regret that such action was necessary," said Joe Powell, A&M's associate vice president for business affairs, in a statement Wednesday. "Be assured we will make a good-faith effort to help all of the affected employees obtain jobs elsewhere within the university, with some perhaps moving into other positions in Transportation Services."

Powell says he has already offered some laid off employees other positions within the department. Seven other employees are being reassigned within the department.

As a result of the money saved, university officials say they will not raise parking permit or transportation fees for the 2006 or 2007 school years.
