Case after case of West Nile virus has been popping up in Brazos County, but mainly in birds and mosquitoes.

But now, for the first time this year, health officials have confirmed a human case.

The person lives on Ashburn Drive in College Station. According to the Health Department, the patient tested positive Friday, but has since fully recovered from the disease. College Station mosquito personnel were immediately dispatched to the area to begin control measures.

According to the CDC, four out of five people never show any symptoms of West Nile if they have it. However, 20 percent develop what is known as West Nile Fever, which includes headaches, tiredness, body aches, and occasionally skin rashes. If untreated, the disease can cause neurological damage.

Also, a blue jay infected with West Nile was found last week on Arbor Drive. This is the 26th site in both the College Station and Bryan area where the virus has been discovered. Mosquito control personnel will be notifying residents by phone, urging them to keep their defenses up against mosquitoes.
