Diesel Prices Hit Truckers Where It Hurts

Many people across the Brazos Valley are adjusting their lives to high gas prices. However, long haul truck drivers who own their own trucks can't pass off the costs.

Across the nation, diesel prices are over $4 a gallon. A full fill-up for a diesel truck can cost about $1,000.

"The man inside, he said its probably going to go up to $5 a gallon," said driver George Rodriguez.

"Well it won't for me because I'm out of business. I'm done," said driver Ed Leason.

Leason drove his truck here from Missouri three weeks ago, to find work. Today, he's throwing in the towel, for good.

"I just called the wife, I'm heading this truck back to Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, while I still got enough money and enough fuel to get there," said Leason.

Since he's been in Texas, Leason says he's been hauling as many loads as he can, but the money isn't adding up.

Leason and Rodriguez say sky-high diesel prices have them stuck between a rock and a hard place.

"$395.90 and that's a little less than yesterday," said Rodriguez of his gas bill.

"Everything we make goes for right here, fuel," said Leason.

"I don't think there's anything different that we can do," said Rodriguez.

"I feel like bawling right now. I'm 68 years old and I've worked my whole damn life and what have I got," said Leason. "It used to be a good living, a good living."

Rodriguez is staying in for now, but isn't optimistic, either.

"I don't think its gonna get any better because the fuel goes up 15 to 20 cents and then when it comes down it just comes down one or two cents," said Rodriguez.

The two drivers said their goodbyes, and Ed Leason prepared for the long ride home.
