She was hired to clean house. Instead, police say she stole nearly $4,000 worth of jewelry from a Bryan woman.

Eva Perez from San Antonio was booked in the Brazos County jail, Friday. She's accused of taking a pair of diamond earrings, and two 14 karat bracelets from the home she was cleaning two years ago.

Perez was subcontracted by "His and Hers Cleaning Service." The company told police that Perez was a temp from "Labor Ready."

Detectives discovered Perez was a wanted fugitive in Bexar County. Perez was arrested there last month for theft, then transferred to Brazos County.

Her bond was set at $5,000.

Well "Jv" ahd "Happy in Bryan"--good for them. Let me try to make this 'clearer' for 'some'----there are to many able bodied individuals sitting at home who can clean their own homes--OK. I am in no way commenting on everyone. If you read the comments correctly (or slowly) you would have seen the word "LAZY". That does not relate to individuals who are not "able" to do it. Too many individuals out there are just what was said---are too "LAZY" to clean their own homes. They sit at home all day lounging around, ordering people around when they can get up off their --- --- ----- and clean their own homes. Maybe "you" won't have that problem either :-)

>>>>Is it possible that Labor Ready did not know she was illegal?<<<<< Sure... just like contractors who pick up dozens of day workers (who only speak spanish) on street corners have no idea that they are illegals. It's their version of "Don't ask, don't tell"...

Posted by: Amazed at the ignorance of this... Location: Bryan on May 21, 2008 at 05:19 PM
I think that Labor Ready is taking an unfair wrap for this. I called them and asked to speak to this woman and they said that they had no employee by that name. Has anyone even checked to be sure that "His & Hers" is even telling the truth about Labor Ready and not just trying to save their own butt. Secondly, when you use a staffing service you have to pay extra to have a background check run. Did "His & Hers" request that this be done? My guess is no. Thirdly, many illegal immigrants have fake social security cards that they pay lots of money for. Is it possible that Labor Ready did not know she was illegal? I have heard very good things about Labor Ready and they are active members of our community. "His & Hers" should bear the responsibility for this, because anytime you use a temporary employee the burden is on you to supervise them once they are on your job site. Labor Ready can't be everywhere at once. "His & Hers" is getting a pass on this one. Finally, why is this a news story?

I've been in business cleaning homes, apts, and real estate listings for 9yrs,over 3 here in CS,I've never heard one good thing about "His&Hers", NOTHING!THEY are the irresponsible party for hiring a thief and all they're doing is passing the blame onto someone else and NOT accepting responsibility for their role in this crime! I get my own jobs, I do the work myself with HONEST people that I personally do background checks on,and I'm here to tell you that NONE of my clients are lazy! These morons who think they can start a business, throw an add in the paper and gather jobs, then "contract" it all out, are the lazy ones!

Happyinbryan, Thank you, thats exactly what I was trying to tell Lazy, ...that people who have a housekeeper are not LAZY, that comment from that person really offended me, my mom has to have a housekeeper, but its not because she is lazy, its because of health reasons, and my Mom is also not rich, and I really hope that person (lazy) never has to have someone come in and help them due to his/her bad health...

I would like to respond to "Lazy" and "Anonymous Location" regarding people cleaning their own houses. I am 77 years old and in pain 24 hrs a day. I cannot get down on the floor to clean like I used to - if I do, I cannot get up without someone lifting me. I have always cleaned my own house even when I was working and would rather do it myself now if I could. I have my house cleaned every 2 weeks. Can't afford more often. Would like to find someone who actually does a good job of cleaning, but can't find that person or persons. Don't be jumping to conclusions about a person being lazy. When you get old and infirm and can bounce around like a teenager, more power to you, but some of us cannot do that. Shame on you!

"Her bond was set at $5,000." I wonder if she tried to use some diamond earrings and a couple of bracelets for her bail...and to bj: How do you know the stuff was out? she could have gone through everything while cleaning unless the homeowner never left her alone...

Posted by: bj Location: cs on May 20, 2008 at 03:45 PM
why would anybody in there right mind leave that much jewelry laying around in a house knowing a strange was there to clean?

Posted by: SH Location: Bryan on May 20, 2008 at 12:56 PM
The fact that she is in this country illegally makes really no difference. Why? Because she will be prosecuted for what she did, will receive jail time because she is not legally here, then once that is over she will be deported............then guess what, give her 6 months or less and SHE WILL BE BACK!! IF HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. It is frustrating because I do see it, more often with DWI's. We have to hire people to come help translate for them just so they can plea out their case. Seems to me that the laws need to change! Everyone deserves the freedom we have but do it legally and live by the laws when you are here. It is interesting to research Mexico's immigration laws! Aside from that, background checks should always be done. That is the only way to protect the company and the people they serve.

Lazy, when I saw your post - I just HAD to comment, not all people who have housekeepers are lazy! You are wrong! My 81 year old Mom has a housekeeper, and its not because of lazyness! Its because of her back problems, her arthritis, and other health concerns. I pray to God that you live to be 80 years old and dont need to have a housekeeper come in and help you!!

If you have a maid, you make too much money, and you're lazy. Clean up your own mess.

To Anonymous, First of all, to use your terminology, "very good people" do not disobey the law. "Very good people" do not ignore the law and enter this great nation illegally. "Very good people" do not take things that do not belong to them. Criminals ignore the laws regarding entry in to this great nation. Criminals take things that do not belong to them. An immigrant, in my book, is a person that comes in to this great nation legally. A criminal alien is a person that swims across the Rio Grande, stows away on a ship, floats here on a raft, overstays a legal visit, etc. , etc. Prosecute the illegal aliens and the people that intentionally hire them or provide them with assistance and housing. Make the climate here unfavorable and they will return to the land of straw huts, drug cartels and donkey shows. Situations such as this could be largely avoided if we would station troops along our borders with orders to shoot anyone that disregards our laws pertaining to legal entry.

KBTX. What about the homes broken into in the Wheeler Ridge and Tiffany Park area. Was it 6 homes last week?

First of all in response to US Citizen...the victim did not know that the suspect was an illegal. The victim hired a company to provide a service and it was the company and Labor Ready who failed to follow through. Secondly, Labor Ready is the least of our problems. When local law enforcement agencies contact an illegal nothing is done for a variety of reasons. One being that there is no way for officers to verify a persons status.

Question:>>>>>Why is it the temp agencies fault that she stole?<<<<< Answer:>>>>Detectives discovered Perez was a wanted fugitive in Bexar County. Perez was arrested there last month for theft, then transferred to Brazos County.<<<<< Do you also think that the Catholic Church bears no responsibility for quietly transferring pedophilic Priests from parish to parish whenever the rumors began to circulate?

Posted by: We need important news. on May 19, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Ok why such a big deal about this story, there always people stealing. Why is it the temp agencies fault that she stole? I have used Labor Ready in the past and they have worked out wonderful. Now what i'm trying to get across is that i have heard worse stories, that the community should know about, then this petty theft. What about the story of a 16 year old girl being raped in BRYAN TEXAS in her own house did yall run that story? I think yall need a sence of whats important....

Why does everyone always jump the gun. What would all your comments have read if this women would have been a citizen like you and me.there are still alot of imagrents that are very good people.this one is just one bad apple in the bunch.Like it or not we are all brothers and sisters in the eyes of the lord.

Posted by: United States Citizen Location: USA-Greatest Nation on Earth on May 19, 2008 at 09:00 AM
John, you are correct. I incorrectly faulted the homeowner, when I should have placed the blame on the agency that hired the illegal alien. The individual that hired the criminal alien should have to share a cell with her.

NEXT TIME HIRE A REAL MAID...

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Navasota on May 19, 2008 at 07:59 AM
Well, if people would clean their own house, none of this would have happened. I know there are maids and butlers and all but; today's people have gotten so lazy that they don't want to clean their own homes or even keep their own children (hire a Nanny). Then when something comes up missing, they can't seem to understand why; or when one of the children begin to like the Nanny more than the Mom, she becomes upset. WELL, DO IT YOURSELF!! Half of these people are sitting at home all day anyway.

>>>>If this is in fact the case, it is difficult for me to have sympathy for someone that allows an illegal alien in their home and gets victimized.<<<< How are the homeowners supposed to know? They used an agency who turned out to be just a subcontractor for another; seems to me that part of the AGENCIES job is to verify the people they are sending out are reputable and competent. In this case, these are two agencies that I'm NOT going to call or recommend if I or anyone I know ever needs temporary help...

Posted by: United States Citizen Location: USA- Greatest Nation on Earth on May 18, 2008 at 03:04 PM
It has been reported that she was in this nation illegally. If this is in fact the case, it is difficult for me to have sympathy for someone that allows an illegal alien in their home and gets victimized. We need to increase the penalties for those that hire illegal aliens. If they can't find work they will return to the land of straw huts, drug cartels and donkey shows.

Labor Ready needs to be investigated.. organized crime.

Posted by: Victoria Location: Bryan on May 18, 2008 at 09:52 AM
Seems like we are going to have to start running background checks on people that we hire, because it certanly seems that the companies that hire them dont!

Posted by: Jv Location: College Station. on May 18, 2008 at 06:28 AM
Pretty bad that she felt that she needed to steal from her employer!

Posted by: EJ Location: Bryan on May 18, 2008 at 02:13 AM
I would have guessed the butler did it.

Posted by: Richard on May 18, 2008 at 01:18 AM
Why didn't Labor Ready do a background check. She should have a social security #. Another person slips into the cracks of our society while someone tries to make a buck. Way to go Labor Ready. Thanks for doing your job so well!!!!
