It's three bad ratings away from being shut down. Hearne ISD was rated academically unacceptable last year, the worst rating the Texas Education Agency dishes out.

However, the school is slowly repairing its scholastic reputation. This year, teachers and students have a reason to celebrate.

Hearne ISD has redeemed itself this year with TAKS scores, on average, 30 percent higher than last year.

School officials say after a few years of unacceptable ratings, the district turned a new leaf. It has hired teachers who want the school to excel, and it has listened to students about what they need to make the grade.

"I looked over to my teachers and they were crying their eyes out," Sonya Vega, a Hearne High School student said. "I was too."

For several years, the small school district failed to make the grade when it came to the TAKS test.
But, this year students excelled, against all odds.

In 2007, 51 percent of 9th graders passed the math portion of the test, and this year 86 percent passed.
75 percent of Hearne freshman passed the english portion of the test in 2007, this year 78 percent excelled.
9th graders are not required to take the science or social studies test.

10th graders also made big improvements.
In 2007, only 26 percent of sophomores passed the math portion, and this year 75 percent passed.
Last year 21 percent passed science and 86 percent excelled this year.
Plus, 61 percent passed the English portion of the test in 2007, 93 percent passed this year.
62 percent of sophomores passed the social studies test last year, and this year 93 percent passed.

Juniors made strides too.
90 percent passed the math portion this year, compared to 61 percent in 2007.
93 percent passed science and only 60 percent excelled last year.
11th graders also scored high in English, 98 percent passed this year, and last year 78 percent passed.

"They don't have a track record of winning, and there are a lot of folks in the community who began to doubt whether they could be winners," one Hearne teacher said. "But, they have the heart of a champion and they showed that."

Hearne officials say the reason for the victory is simple; new teachers who want kids to succeed, listening to students about what they need to learn and hands on instruction.

Hearne ISD is made up of mostly economically disadvantaged students and minorities. The school district says it's curriculum is designed to help students with these specific backgrounds.

Hearne also hired an outside coach to come into their schools twice a week to work with teachers and administrators.

The TAKS is a serious series of tests the state has mandated. Seniors must pass them in order to graduate, and schools with failing TAKS grades run the risk of losing state accreditation

I agree my statement about Munford was probably in haste, but if you hurt my students, I will come out fighting. Many on that day ,wanted to discredit their progress and achievement. I do know that they, being Munford, send us students that do not measure up to their standards from Hearne. I figured with all the hatred that Hearne has had to endure for years, a little criticism would not hurt Munford's feelings--sorry to offend. However, you have been putting down my kids for years. Retired teacher--- This is blogging. Correct grammar has gone out the window. It is a plight we fight daily. I am guessing you are red pen grader too.

Job Well Done to all students in the state of Texas who struggle and work extremely hard to not only PASS, but try to MASTER the TAKS Test. Altough I am Truly Elated with the turnover that our Children here at the High School have made, I must first give thanks to my Heavenly Father, for without him our success means nothing. I am extremely PROUD of our Children and I can assure that they have been working hard since the start of this year towards "ATTACKING the TAKS!", which has hung in our halls all year. This motto as well as, "Go Seabiscuit!, from Mrs. Post", will forever be a new strength to our kids success. Keep up the EXCELLENT JOB students of Hearne High School and continue to press towards the High Calling, for as long as our FAITH remains the size of a mustard seed, there will not be any obstacle to large for us to overcome. May God Bless and Keep is my continued prayer for my Hometown and School. Congratulations to the Graduating Class of 2008, you made it now Claim IT!

I am very proud of the students, teachers, and principals of Hearne ISD. They have been working real hard to get the scores up. As a resident and tax payer of Hearne, we listen to people who have positive things to say about our children. If you look at the picture, our school district is going in the right direction but they are lacking one thing. We need A TRUE LEADER who wants to see the district excel not just come in and get rich like Mr. Deaver is doing. Most people don't know that he is making over $100,000 a year plus 10% of every grant that is written in Hearne ISD. People at REGION VI SERVICE CENTER say that Hearne ISD is making good progress but need a NEW LEADER(superintendent) that is more focused on education not a fat wallet.

I for one am a witness as to how hard these students work in order to pass the TAKS. For the very very few of you who have negative things to say read and reread what Ms Judy had to say. My hat goes off for Mr. Wells (Principal) for doing so well for his first year as principal, students, teachers, staff and Board Memebers thank you for a job well done. As far as Mr. Deaver goes (lol) get real.

Congratulations Hearne ISD, you deserve to celebrate your accomplishments. Congrats to all students who passed the TAKS regardless what school district you attend. To Tammie you seemed offended by the negative remark that was made towards Hearne school, so why would you make the same negative remark to another school because of ignorance. Whenever Hearne appears in the news someone always bring up Mumford. There's other schools in the surrounding area which students attend and live in Hearne. Good Job to all students who passed the TAKS! Celebrate Hearne! No one can take away your accomplishments.

After reading all the postings, I must congratulate Hearne students and teachers. I do have one question, though. What happened to correct spelling and punctuation?

The students, teachers, and administration worked hard to put their community on the map. Today, Hearne has earned the respect of all of Texas and HISD has put together a world class educational environment. It was no easy road but they proved their goal was attainable and important. Way to go!

Everyone is sayin investigate this and that when something good comes to Hearne, some people need to get a life. I have been involved with the school and have seen what the teachers have done with these childern. Some have came along way and everyone deserves that chance for improvement in their life. Great job to all at Hearne High. Keep up the good work and in return you will be rewarded for the hard work.

We should never forget that the harsh words we use are words targeted at children. These are kids,grandkids.. mine & could be yours some day.Be happy for this, it is a good thing not bad.Put yourself in the shoes of those that did good. Keep knocking them down & maybe they will stop believeing in themselves. These will be the adults you will be complaining about in the future for not making something of themselves. I am proud & I knew we could do it! Great Job to all!

To Stan the Man and Terri. Thanks for the complements! Stan, this has actually been a three year long process that is not over. We have actually had other schools visit already because in the "education circles" people heard what we were doing. Manor ISD and a district near Austin visited last year. To Terri, we stole Slovak and Brown from a Bryan private school and are so fortunate to have them. We have many people interviewing almost daily for the few positions we have open. The kids are still so excited and don't worry about the "nay-sayers" can't touch them! The students talked about the comments left here and understand the negative comments are due to ignorance. It shouldn't be hard to understand what happened--they hired the best, the teachers were supported and praised, training was ongoing and consistent, and the students were put first. Sort of makes common sense, right? There weren't any special programs, just the right personnel. It's a pretty easy concept.

Posted by: Sondra Location: Bryan on May 22, 2008 at 04:37 PM
Miracles do happen, but in this case, "miracles" of student motivation, quality teachers, instructional leadership and prioritizing needs throughout the district happened purposefully over two years. There was no cheating. The TEA has been "monitoring" HISD progress and decision-making over the past two years. Hearne ISD may now be a model for other struggling districts. Watch them maintain their efforts and continue their way to the top! Way to go HISD!

Posted by: Citizen too. Location: Hearne on May 22, 2008 at 03:33 PM
Tammie wrote, "I am a teacher at the Jr High...... See Mumford about cheating." Great example Tammie. Do you have proof of cheating? I hope your students don't take after you. More a poor role model. Be happy for your student's success. Be happy for the success at Mumford. Stop the negative, untrue comments, it tarnishes Hearne's accomplishments...

Tammy- if you really are a teacher, then I cannot believe you are stooping down to that level to call anyone else cheaters. Be proud of what you have and leave others out of it. You have to be able to take the good with the bad in situations like this. Calling students and teachers at Mumford cheaters brings you down to the level of scum. Keep your head high as a teacher and actually set an example for those students you've been teaching. Teachers should be held to the highest degree of expectations because they are the ones who mold and develop our future. Please set a good example for them.

The principals, teachers, support staff, and students gets all the credit. Mr. Deaver does nothing to help with TAKS. He has been in Hearne almost 5 years and scores haven't been this good. When you put the right people in the right positions, then you will have great success. The school board deserves the credit of hiring these people that the principals recommened.

Congratulations to the students in HISD! As a citizen of Hearne this makes me very proud! If investigated I'm sure TEA will find only excellent teaching practices as well as a group effort. However, I am very concerned about the elementary school because I have heard nothing about their scores and I have read recently about the termination of their current principle, which was previously investigated. While I congratulate the efforts of the higher education staff, I am very concerned about the future of the elementary school.

Posted by: yo tammie on May 22, 2008 at 12:00 PM
Tammie, have you ever been in a mumford school? Stop pointing ignorant fingers, mumford is a great district that cares about its kids, and hearne now has the proof that it is a great district. (they have been great all along but now have written proof for the doubters and haters out there) Tammie, get off you high horse and set a better example for your students. How disgusting that you would make such a false and derogitory statement. Shame on you!

How dare people say that theses children cheated on the test. Have we forgotten that these kids have feelings? The students at Hearne ISD have worked so hard all year in order to make the grade and yall have the nerve to say they cheated. Who are you to make that assumption? Unless you work here you dont know what our teachers and students have done to accomplish this goal. Hearne students have finally proven that if you believe in your students they can do anything. To the students congratulations don't let all the haters take away your glory. Its your time to shine.

GREAT JOB HEARNE ISD!!!!!

Posted by: Terri Location: College Station on May 22, 2008 at 08:18 AM
I don't know any teachers at Hearne ISD except Mrs Janet Brown, the Math Teacher, and Mrs. Slovak, the English Teacher. Two of my daughters were fortunate to have them as teachers when they taught here in Bryan. While the increase of TAKS scores are impressive in Hearne, it did not surprise me. These two teachers were probably the best teachers my daughters ever had. So, Kudos to you Mrs Brown and Mrs Slovak, and the other teachers who make up the Hearne ISD. And KUDOS to the kids, because you have worked hard. These teachers raised the bar for you to achieve and make high scores on the TAKS, but most of all, I know you walk out of their classes with knowledge. They demand it! KUDOS KUDOS KUDOS.

Congrats Hearne!!!

Posted by: Stan the Man on May 22, 2008 at 07:56 AM
The truth is, TEA probably WILL investigate HISD. That kind of improvement sends up flares and warning sirens in Austin. But if HISD has their ducks in a row, they will become the success model for the whole state -- maybe even the nation. They'll have so many people visiting them to see how they did it, that the hallways will be clogged! What I see that Hearne students will take from this is an understanding that they can contribute to and control their own success.

Posted by: Class of 2006 in another town Location: Bryan on May 22, 2008 at 07:48 AM
Standardized testing is a joke. I was class of 2006 which was the first class to have to take the TAKS test to graduate. Teachers do concentrate on mainly the TAKS test these days. I came from a little town. My graduating class had 11 people in it including myself. Although the TAKS test takes up a big part of a teachers and kids time it is something that we have to do. And yes the TAKS test does credit the teachers so the teachers are very concerned with their students passing TAKS. But just because we don't all agree with TAKS doesn't mean that we have to bash the kids that worked very hard to pass. Personaly i think TAKS should be done away with, however that is not going to happen, so to those in Hearne Congratulations!!

Good job H-town!! Wish teachers cared as much at our high school/prison Bryan High. See BHS just tranfers all there "low score", bad attendance or just kids with problems to ACE.. Then that way when they fail, it has nothing to do with BHS. It keeps them looking good. When the real truth is that they just pawn off the less likely to pass kids to ACE.. Its a secret way of lieing about your academics. I would like to know how many TOTAL kids from ACE and BHS together, have scored and what is their drop out rate!!!!! This is all FACT!!!!!

I am a teacher at the Jr High. I would like to say to everyone that Hearne is a remarkable place. I have taught in Bryan, and I prefer Hearne. We are sucessful because we believe in our kids. They are amazing. Our pricipal is second to none. He supports us and trust the educators to make the right choices for our children. To those whom are yelling foul, bring on TEA, we have seating charts, we have documentation, and proof. We anticipated so many disbelieving in us and our kids. If we were to cheat, Hearne would have done it a long time ago. See Mumford about cheating. WE ARE THE HONEST ONES. Stop making our accomplishments less. Great JOB Kids. I am so proud of you

continued---Lectures and worksheets were to be used as a minimum. Inquiry, group work, projects, presentations, multi-media were all encouraged. Learning was made fun again. We had very little turn over last year and the excitement as scores began to rise was infectious. Students are all that mattered. Teachers were empowered by administrators from Central Office to the schools made decisions along with the principals. Not top down leadership, decisions were made by the "school as a whole" often with the students involved in the decision making and serving on committees. It was hard work, but the kids knew that they had teachers and administrators who believed in them and they met the challenge by encouraging each other. Coaches attended every meeting. Football and basketball started late on Wednesdays, our training day. The kids came back to school for football practice ---after 5 when our trainings ended. I am so proud of their accomplishment!

The positive comments are greatly appreciated. Three years ago, I was hired to work with the teachers and administrators WEEKLY to help turn the school around. After that first year, 17 teachers needed to leave because they didn't fit in with the bar that was set by the superintendent, the principals, or the teachers. In the fall of 2006, 17 mostly new teachers, were hired. I interviewed them along with the principals. The lowest GPA was a 3.7. Most, but not all are graduates of TAMU. For the past three years, this school has met weekly, researched and visited successful schools, participated in book studies and set a vision (together with the students) that their success was the only thing that mattered. We created a school that we would want our own children to attend. The teachers each day asked themselves, "Would I have wanted my child to be in my class today?" The teachers were trained for active teaching with a multitude of strategies available.

Congratulations to the administration, faculty, and staff of Hearne ISD. The test scores are just a reflection of the outstanding student population that attends Hearne ISD today. The team effort over the past years from elementary school through high school is now paying academic dividends. These dividends are resulting in more Hearne ISD graduates attending college. I notice that here on the A&M campus and on websites like facebook. Enjoy the positive press… hopefully the media will cover the Hearne Air Fair in October where they can see first hand some of the many fine programs at Hearne ISD.

To "Teacher": Don't come around here trying to blow smoke up everyones B*tt. The real reason you despise the TAKS test is it separates the competent teachers from the sub-performers. Now that we have TAKS it is much easier for us to determine which teachers are motivated, go getters and which teachers are lacking in drive and motivation. No doubt you are a member of the latter group as opposed to the former. That's OK though. Steps are currently being taken to wash our hands of a few of you.

Hello,I am a student at Hearne High School and i wanted to thank all the people who helped us and supported us in our time of need, but i want all the other people to understand that, that was then this is now, we accomplished something that we worked hard on,and we did not cheat we were just supported by people who cared.

Loser Police...get real. Since "No Child Left Behind", all schools are doing is teaching to the TAKS. As a teacher, it's a sad, but true fact that I face everyday. Let's go back to when teachers could teach meaningful lessons and not have to stress the kids out with needless testing.

Congratulations to superintendent David Deaver, teachers, and students at Hearne ISD! Its nice to see our neighbors celebrate such success. This not only helps Hearne, but Robertson County and the Brazos Valley as a whole. Good job.

As a former teacher of Hearne, I constantly tell others how incredible the students and teachers are at Hearne I.S.D. In the face of so much adversity they continue to excel. These scores are a perfect example.

Rick...Great job of looking and breaking down the school's AEIS data...However, with Hearne being such a small school district, they only have one teacher that teaches each particular grade level or math class. What does this mean? Well, it means that when you get a better teacher in, a whole class benefits. Dont down the school, they have been working really hard.

Finally, something positive about Hearne schools! Great Job! Keep it up!

Hearne ISD. great accomplishment. I hope this will rub off on BISD Texas ave. administion. We need some help with a 26% drop out rate. The worst in the area.

Seems suspicious. What you have to look at is improvement by class, not by grade. Last year’s sophomore class, who are now juniors, passed at a rate of only 26% in math last year, but this year all of a sudden 90%, 21% in science to 93% this year, and 61% in english to 98%. That’s a 57% average turn around with that class. If you ask me, that seems a little suspicious. With Hearne being dangerously close to losing accreditation, who’s to say what they would have done to prevent that.

I am sure this is already being investigated, but congratulations if its actually legit.

So, Hearne teachers are now spending every minute of the day cramming TAKS down the students' throats. Losers!

TAKS scores are a very valuable tool tax payers and parents can use to measure the performance of students and teachers. The people that have seen my previous comments on here are well aware of the fact that I am very quick to give credit where credit is due for failing test scores and teacher misconduct. It is an extremely rare occasion when I can find something positive to say about the public schools. By the same token, it is only fair that I praise success when it is obvious. Congratulations to the students, tax payers, parents, administrators board members and teachers of the Hearne ISD for a job well done. Keep up the good work.
