Background Check May Have Prevented Fugitive From Becoming a Maid Save Email Print

Eva Perez enjoyed a stay in the Brazos County Jail this weekend. Bryan Police say she'd been on the run the past two years, ever since she was accused of taking jewelry from a Bryan home she was hired to clean.

The alleged theft is a situation that could have easily been prevented. Perez was a temp hired through Labor Ready, in Bryan.

When His and Hers Cleaning Service needed a maid at the last minute, they turned to Labor Ready.

Apparently, neither company did a thorough check of Perez's background. The woman was a wanted fugitive in Bexar county.

Its likely Perez wouldn't have been hired at Howell Service Corporation, where applicants' backgrounds are checked twice.

"We do one through the Brazos County website for a local background check and we also do through Texas Department of Public Service," said Helen Beard, of Howell Service Corp.

Owners at His and Hers say it wasn't their responsibility to run a background check. Even if they had, the company says it only checks the Brazos County website.

Another 10 bucks on the DPS website would have shown Perez's warrant in Bexar County.

Labor Ready's website promises to deliver "dependable employees" for "an honest days work." Neither the Bryan branch, nor anyone at the company's Washington headquarters, would comment.

For Bryan-College Station residents, background checks are a new reality.

"Years ago, you'd never have though about anything like that. Now its something that's very important," said Bryan resident Robert Horton.

The fault here doesnt lay with His n Hers cleaning service, nor Howells, the fault here lays with Labor Ready, they are the ones this woman was employed with, they are the ones who should have ran the background check.

His and Hers has cleaned my house for 8 years, and I have always been happy with the people they employee. This looks like some kind of a advertisment for Howell. I heard Howell has had issues with illegal aliens, so it is easy to point the finger. Bottomline- no company is perfect and a back gound check is not going to stop someone from stealing.

I think it was very distasteful for KBTX to mention how only one competitor to His and Hers would process background checks. If you mention one competitor, you need to mention them all. Since you only listed Howell Service Corp in your story. You show little, if any, impartiality in your reporting, or are just plain lazy. I'm sure Howell Service Corp advertises on KBTX, or cleans your offices, but that still does not make it right. It makes KBTX appear to have an agenda.

I don't think His & Hers was "planning" to hire this woman. It says she was a "temp" and was "needed at the last minute." In this situation, His & Hers was the client of Labor Ready, and Labor Ready should have been the one to do the background check. And while it's great that Howell Service Corp. does two background checks on all of their "applicants," this lady (Perez) wasn't an "applicant" for His & Hers and so probably wouldn't have gotten the background check in this case at Howells either. This seems to be very biased reporting!!!

That may be true about howell service but can you honestly say that all their workers are legal citizens? No I believe not. So can they really run back ground checks, when they technically don't exists on paper!!!

His and Her's should have done thier own back ground check if they were planning to hire this woman. That's why I clean my own house.
