This Memorial Day weekend, you've got a chance to be more energy efficient at a lower cost.

Shoppers in Texas will get a tax break on certain products from May 24-26.

College Station Utilities says you should just look for the Energy Star logo on products like air conditioning units under $6,000, clothes washers, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers, dishwashers and light bulbs, among others.

The following is a press release from College Station Utilities' electric department concerning the Memorial Day Weekend tax breaks:

COLLEGE STATION, TX- Texas shoppers can get a break from state, local and use taxes on purchases of certain energy efficient products during this Memorial Day Weekend Tax Holiday, May 24-26, 2008.

Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE). Products displaying an Energy Star logo meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by these federal agencies.

All qualifying products will display the Energy Star logo. Look for the Energy Star logo displayed on the appliance, its packaging, or on the Energy Guide label. There is no limit as to the number of qualifying products that may be purchased during this sales tax holiday and no exemption certificate is required for purchase.

Products qualifying for this exemption include:

- room and central air conditioners priced under $6,000.00

- clothes washers (but not dryers because most have similar energy usage)

- ceiling fans

- dehumidifiers

- dishwashers

- light bulbs (incandescent and fluorescent)

- programmable thermostats

- refrigerators priced under $2,000

Shop smart! For more information or contact Jane Sayers at the College Station Utilities Energy offices at 979-764-3724 or visit www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_836.
