President Bush says Samuel Alito "has more prior judicial experience than any Supreme Court nominee in more than 70 years."
The president introduced his new nominee to the court at the White House this morning. Bush calls the nominee one of the "most
accomplished and respected judges" in the country.
Alito has served on the Third U-S Court of Appeals since 1990.
The nominee says he's "deeply honored" to be nominated. If confirmed, he would replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
Alito says he will do everything within his power to "faithfully and fairly" interpret the law.
Alito is seeking support on Capitol Hill today, where he's meeting Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. The two are also due to visit the coffin of the late civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks.
