A new era has begun for the College Station Police Department. Michael Ikner was sworn in Friday as the its next Chief of Police.

Friends, family and colleagues gathered at the Hilton Hotel for a reception immediately afterward. Ikner's first day on the job will be Monday.

But he says once he starts, he won't spend a lot of time sitting behind a desk. "I believe that leaders should be out in the field as much as they can to understand policing at its rawest state," he said. "I'm an advocate for leaders who lead from the trenches. Generals need to lead from the front."

Ikner comes to College Station from the Arlington Police Department where he was Assistant Chief in charge of field operations.

Chief Iker please drive to Bryan you are Armand and have a radio if you need help. Make sure we do not get to be like Bryan with Police Shootings and a High crime rate,That only a few cities in Texas can match. Maybe you can found a way to return some of this Bryan trash. Thank you

I vote for a wall and a News area only for CS. Bryan looks and sounds like Hearne and navasota.

Welcome to the complaining capital of Texas Chief Ikner! You're probably regretting coming to an area full of a bunch of whiners!! Almost every poster here sounds absolutely ridiculous. Good luck Chief, I wish you all the good fortune possible.

College Station has a lot more crime than people realize. Just read the police blotter on the city's web site and see that CS is not exempt from crime. It doesn't always make the news, but it's here also.

You Bryan people need to keep your Bryan comments out of College Station. It's not like you haven't had your city picked clean by all the gang bangers, thugs and trash that inhabit your city and have overflowed into Colleg Station. If I wanted to live in a welfare environment I would have moved to Bryan.

Bill-What in the world does your little poor me rant about Bryan have to do with the new chief in College Station? What a baby....

Can we just put a wall up in CS north of University and also annex the east side of Bryan East of HWY 6. The US government has been making walls in Iraq and some southern states. Israel has had good results stopping crime also. Bryan has the makings of a great penal colony and INS/ICE holding center.

Brazos so has approximately 555 Inmates in Jail. The Justice system is not helping. I agree with you Alan the system is braking down in this county. Between the Courts,Judges and a Higher turn over of Adm. Officers in some of the local PDS thing are getting bad for County. I live in Bryan and can see a big difference in Crime and the way the New Police chief is working on it for Bryan. Some of the new Police program's used in Bryan are working for the City. CSPD looks to be making more arrest of Bryan citizens. We have not had any Police shooting since last year in Bryan. Someone made a point about the Texas DPS Crime Rates. I looked and had not Idea that we have one of the highest per capita crime rates in the state. CS was below the state AVG. I bet the numbers change some next year for CS and are higher. This pushing scum back from one city to the next in the end will not work for the County as a whole. CS can not blame us for cleaning up Bryan after decades of Crime.

Well said Alan...

My point of the earlier statement is that you can not solely blame Bryan PD for problems in Bryan. You read in the news all the time about arrests Bryan PD is making on murders, robberies, burglaries, etc., but what happens to these folks after they are booked in? We've seen the outrage on low bonds given to violent criminals. What happens when these folks get out of jail and back in the community? They re-offend, because they are scum of the Earth. Also, there is plenty of blame to go around when it comes to the courts, attorney's offices, and juries. Seriously, how does a man convicted of murder get 10 years probation? So, as a resident of B/CS, everyone has a piece in this increase in crime. Do not solely blame the police, at least they're willing to face what others are scared to death to face.

I dont agree with the statement that Bryan is full of trash! There are some good people in Bryan. Yes we have some problems, BUT SO DOES COLLEGE STATION! My brother was a College Station police for more than 25 years, and believe me there are things go on that no one knows about.

I agree with Alan. Bryan has a poor record of family values with poor schools and a high drop out rate of 26%. The poorly ran police dept. years back was unable to cope with the influx of sleaze in the city. The PD is professionally managed today with positive things going on now. Family values look to be a factor in the high crime rate that Texas DPS reports for Bryan. Another factor of a high crime rate in Bryan is a poorly manged PD with high turn over of management. This may have something to do with low clearance rates reported years back to DPS. Lets hope it is not time for CS.

To the point. Alan Bryan is full of Trash.

Susan and Bill, will you please proofread your posts before submitting? It is very hard to understand, and it's hard to take anyone seriously that really doesn't have a grasp of the English language. Having studied crime trends and behavior in college, you can not solely blame the police for the problem. It starts with the family, or lack thereof. The police unfortunately have to come in and try to fix years of screwed up behavior, and when one of these punks breaks into your car, house or whatever, then everyone wants to blame the police for what happened. Let's put the blame back where it belongs, the FAMILY!!!!!

Welcome and best of luck!

College station Police Dept looks to be going down faster then Bryan did with its failed leadership. It is a good thing we do not have a New Sheriff ever few years. Bryan looks like it has had ever thing stolen that was worth Taking in the last 15 years and now it is time for College Station. I have friends in Bryan that have been in crimes over the years and had nothing good to say about the Police Department. One of them called The police arrogant SOB after taking with them 4 or 5 Years back and it sounds like they still have some of them working. She is a 81 year old and church going. We need to make sure this Chiefs works out. I am told that things are looking up for are sister city now. How many Chiefs did it take for a sister city to make any improvement? This is on road we need to stay off.

Welcome to town Chief Ikner! Best wishes in your transition. I sure hope your dept will still be as intent on taking drunks out of public and off the roads (college students or otherwise). If arresting college students for drugs and alcohol is the worst I see in the paper, I'll be a happy citizen.

Sounds like the new chief in Bryan has some house cleaning to do as he has been saying to the public. All the chiefs in Bryan is the reason the city is in the Crime mass he have now. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to see that some of the past Chiefs in Bryan have been anything but effective. Duds. It is nice to see one person think he has been effective in this mass. But it takes a whole department to be effective in fighting crime. One person can not do it and Bryan crime rate shows it. I can tell you I have a very large family in Bryan going back into the 1800's and we all have been crime victims in the last 8 are so years. One thing we all agree on is the PD never caught anyone and called any of us back. The Police Chief we have now is the best one I have seen in decades. He has motived the police in service. The police now know who they work for. You will get a call back now. The Officers he has picked to run the Dept are friendly motivated and care. Chief you missed one.

Some of those effective Chiefs Bryan had sure helped some senior Locals expressed Police officers with decades of service to Bryan move on fast. I can only wonder how 3 Bryan police officers could stand by while one of them is robbed of his gun and has it pointed at them and do nothing as he runs off with the gun from the Officer. What did it take to get the officer's service weapon back about 1-week and How many weeks for the robber to get arrested. Hope BPD does not have anymore effective police like this. I also remember the Chief at the time saying we need to look at the officers training. In a larger area like Houston, and Dallas some of these effective training personnel would get fired. I Hope the new Chief removed some of the effective training FTO BPD had at the time. Anyone that thinks BPD has been run effectively with the High turn over of adminastion and high crime rate. Has no experience in Police work with a large progressive Law Enforcement Agency. Good luck CSPD.

It seems to me that most of the officers at CS focus on how many drunk college students they can arrest and NOT focus on the real crime in the city..I wonder if most of the arrests are even legit. I also agree with the poster that mentioned cleaning house within the dept. itself. The front page of the Eagle (last week)was about a joke! Pretty sad when your top brass is corrupt! Lets hope that the new Chief can get rid of some dead weight and get some new people that are upstanding. From what I saw while at CSPD was nothing but cliques and supposed to be mgt./people in charge but NOT doing their job! I think the new Chief will bring integrity back to CSPD, lets hope anyways.

Hey... the segment is on CS. With all the headlines recently, change should be welcomed. Sounds like "anonymous" is a frustrated and bitter retiree who doesn't know what he or she is talking about. I work there and all have been effective with different styles. The current chief although effective so far, has a small but tight-knit loyal group of supporters who uses fear and intimidation. Just ask some of the older employees including Komar and Walling if their confidentiality agreements permit them to be honest. Good luck Chief!

Posted by: RJ Location: CS on May 31, 2008 at 11:24 AM
This chief needs to get into action fast. I am starting to feel that I live in the Slums of CS. I Feel the new Bryan PD aggressive plan of targeting the gangs and criminals is working in Bryan. We need something like it in CS. It is shocking to see the crime rate numbers Texas DPS posted on it web site for Bryan and to think we are next to it.

I say "Welcome to College Station, Chief Ikner!"

Posted by: concerned citizen Location: college station on May 30, 2008 at 10:56 PM
Okay let see if he has the guts to clean house!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 30, 2008 at 10:42 PM
Lets hope it does not tutn into a chief every few years like Bryan we have an increasing crime rate and a lot of people being arrested in College Station that live in Bryan and are committing crimes in College Station. Hope the new chief has experience in rapes, robberies, shooting and other crime that we have seen increase since huricane Katrina. I thought the last cheif was doing a good job and was open with information. Unlike previous police cheifs in Bryan. However, the one good point is Bryan does now seem to have a good cheif. Let's just hope they can keep him. Some of the past police chiefs in Bryan have been walking disasters. I don't say this lightly after working in both local and federal law enforcement over the years and now being retired.
