The key ingredient needed to get through this holiday season may be patience. And you'll need to have a lot if you plan on traveling.

If you're in the process of planning a trip out of town for Thanksgiving, you may be running into a few roadblocks. This holiday traveling season may be the most hectic yet. That's because you may not be able to find or afford what you're looking for.

"Airlines have cut back flights so drastically this year that it's not uncommon for us to look at flights for days on end and not find seats much less discounted prices," said Kay Villasana with A&M Travel.

She says it will be tough to find cheap airline tickets this year because most carriers are struggling financially.

Tickets are always more expensive during the holidays but some fares are more than doubling from off-peak times.

Travel experts offer these tips to help you survive this year's holiday travel season.

Be flexible. You may have to alter your arrival and return dates.
Shop around. Look at several different websites and call different airlines to get the best deals. Give yourself plenty of time. Arrive at the airport at least 2 hours early.

"Allow yourself time because the parking lots are going to be full and the security lines are gong to be very cram-packed," said Villasana.

On the upside, gas prices are dropping, and it may actually be cheaper to drive to your destinations. But no matter how you travel, you'll need to start planning for your trip as early as possible.
