The speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, took a break from Washington and stopped by Texas A&M Monday.

Hastert spoke at the Bank of America Program on volunteerism at the Annenberg Conference Center Monday afternoon.

The program was hosted to talk about the importance of volunteer activities in today's society. Bush 41 said Hastert is an effective leader.

Hastert says despite the negative publicity at the White House now, things are looking up.

"Our nation will continue to face unknown challenges and as an old coach I learned long ago that there's always room for improvement, but we are responding to the needs of our nation and we are doing the work that the American people elected us to do," said Hastert.

Hastert also talked about the economy and the war in Iraq.
