An armed holdup at a Caldwell grocery store ends in a shootout that leaves the suspect dead and a police officer wounded.

Authorities say Louis Arvin tried to rob the Brookshire Brothers grocery store on Highway 36 Tuesday afternoon.

When officers arrived, he fled, leading to a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended at a home on Highway 21, adjacent to the Loving Word Christian Ministry chapel.

"We heard a pop," Caldwell resident Tom Corsello said. "Then a pop, pop, pop."

Gunfire erupted in the front yard of the Caldwell home. According to Texas Ranger Frank Malinak, Arvin shot Cadwell Officer Cougan Hignight. Hignight returned fire, killing Arvin.

Officer Cougan Hignight was transported to St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan with a gunshot wound in his right arm. He was later released.

RESPECT??! since when do peace officers get respect? sure a few people are left in the world, but for the most part, cops thought either to be crooked or to have some kind of complex. the whole time you are talking about respecting peace officers you are bashing them by saying that their job is not dangerous.

BB You said>>>>>>I think the police should not fire until fired upon>>>>>>>Jun 12 at 6:29am I hope you do not think police are that dumb in Bryan and the USA. >>>>>most criminals don't have the brass to do it.>>>> Have you ever heard of suicide by cop and suicide bombers. Criminals have been shooting police officers for hundreds of years. Gun fights do not happen like on TV. If you let the bad guy shoot first all the time like you said we would have alot of dead police and private citizens. The next time a cop comes to a business robbery and the person inside has a gun he gets a free shot at the police. If the officer is killed then the robber shoots the employee and goes. If the cop wins then we are ok. Get a cup of coffee no one is this Nieve. Turn off the tv it does not work this way in real life as others have been telling you. All the Bryan PD shootings were no bills by the DA. Whoever suggested the citizens police academy to you was being polite to someone of your intelligence.

NOW THAT WE HAVE MET OUR LATEST HERO WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO FOR HIM? HE HAS BEEN IN OUR COMMUNITY FOR ONLY A SHORT WHILE AND HAS PUT HIS LIFE ON THE LINE FOR US... HE IS WOUNDED AND HEALING...FOR US... FOR US. SUPPORT YOUR PROTECTORS...THIS ONE OBVIOUSLY WAS THERE WHEN YOU NEEDED HIM. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU WILL NEED ONE OF THEM AGAIN.

I want to just Thank everyone would putting there lives on the line! I appreciate not only officers but just an average Joe. I think that its hard to living in the world today. I think that every story has two sides, and we only know of one. But again Thank God for everday we have that we are Free.

What about us electricians, fisherman, farmers, construction workers, truck drivers, loggers, miners, pilots etc.. We dont get near the respect we should, for putting our lives on the line everyday too. Did you know that all these jobs have a higher death and injury chance. policeman isnt even in the top 10. Im not bashing the police, i just think that us everyday workers dont get any of the respect that policeman get, and perks too. But ther job is still dangerous and i respect the policeman, shake his hand too, but every once in awhile shake the hand of one of the above listed and remeber evertime you turn on a light switch or drive down the road, fly, eat, and sleep, just remeber that someone put there life on the line to give you that too. EVERYDAY!!

To PO PO, whether or not this guy was a bad influence or not, this baby will never get to know the dad that he may or may not have been to this child. I do not agree with what went down but to say that someone is better off with a parent is cruel. Everyone has the right to know his parent and when they are of age, let them be the judge of what they think of him. God Bless all people invovled in this situation. OH, and way to go Good Samratian who helped Mrs. Castillo in this time of need, along with the Rent-A-Car place, this makes her life just a little easier in trying to get from poit A to B.

Well that is why kids get shot with toy guns. Thats why a man reaching for his wallet gets shot 15 times. Thats when someone running from police gets shot in the back outside of a restaurant. Since when should a police officer get to be executioner. This type of crap really happens and idiots like you who think that they should kill first and ask questions later could never be a policeman.

it is sadening to read that everyone jumped to the conclusion that it was a black man. I lived in caldwell for years, and unfortunately the majority of the people i knew there were racist(i am a white male), and it sickened me. Pray for the officer, the criminals family and a town to open up there minds.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 13, 2008 at 10:24 AM
Isn't that the darn truth PO PO!

Posted by: PO PO Location: Near You on Jun 13, 2008 at 07:37 AM
The 3 year old will be much better off without this thug in his life. The child will now have a much better chance at life since this negative influence has been removed from the equation. Trash, like this dead thug, is the reason people should have to have a license to reproduce. I have sympathy for the injured police officer and the poor people that were in the store that must have been scared to death. I don't have one ounce of sympathy for the dead thug. Death is just a cost of doing business in his line of work. Maybe this will open the eyes of a few other thugs and they will change their ways before they have to walk a mile in this dead thug's shoes.

Posted by: PJ Location: Bryan on Jun 13, 2008 at 01:03 AM
You can tell who is in Bryan and who does not from the Comments. Who would be dumb and let the criminal have one shot free first. Use your head. If it has a hole in it. You can not return fire. Lets see. If the thug fire at you first and If you live then you can return fire. Body armor works like on a movie and guns also. People hit with bullets fly across the room. Please change the channel to TRU-TV to see what happens to someone in real life that is hit with body armor and without it. Also CSPD BPD and Brazos county Sheriff Dept have free Citizens academy's. It is real life.

"Just because he tried to rob a store doesn't truly make him a thug." I don't believe for one second that "concerned citizen" actually believes that. This is obviously a person that posts a bunch of BS on here just to see if he can get a reaction out of others. Well "concerned citizen", it didn't work this time. Better luck next time. Happiness is knowing the low life, thug that robbed the store and shot a police officer is at room temperature. :)

I am a police officer. I am glad that the Officer will be ok. It is a bad thing that the suspect had to die, but if I was faced with the same problem I would have killed the suspect too. The main thing I think about at work is going home to my family. I do not feel bad for the suspect no one made him shoot at the officer. I really am sorry about the 3 year old, that would be a hard thing to tell him that he will not see his dad again. I worry that someone will have to tell my children that there dad was killed by a criminal.

Posted by: Tangleia Location: Bryan on Jun 12, 2008 at 04:18 PM
Concern citizen, think of that officers family. Do you think the thug was thinking about his 3 year old when he did what he did? The fact is we are all reponsible for our own actions, and we have to suffer the consequences of our actions as well. I hate that anyone lost their life but again he is resonsible for what cost him his life. If it was my family member I would have gotten them some help or prayed for them. I will pray for his family as well as the officers family. It is the family that will suffer from all this.

Posted by: concern citizen on Jun 12, 2008 at 02:03 PM
Well Im sitting hear reading all of the comments and majority of them are talking about a thug. Some of yall didn't know this man and just because he tried to rob a store dosen't truly make him a thug. In life you never know what you are going to do. He could have lived a good life but stuff do come up and change people. To the ones that judges people that is not right. How dare yall judge others. I bet half of yall thats doing this stuff life aint about nothing. So stop it. Now instead of call him a thug, think about his 3 yrs old child. How do they tell him or her that he or she would never be able to see their dad nomore. And Next think about what if it was someone in YOUR family -your son or daughter What would you do then?

Just because most of time it is a race other than White. Is not a reason to think we do not have white criminel trash also. Texas is a Equal Opportunity State for all criminals of any race color and religion. Bryan slums the manufactory for some of it. Do not forget about Navasota and Hearne the export also. All criminals are criminals. Bryan PD has shot criminals of all different races in the last 9 years. Race did not play a role in this.

Picture on the news shows Arvin to be a "white male." Did you anticipate that only a "black man" would be stupid enough to rob the Brookshire Bros and start a shoot out with the police dept.?

Response to:Anonymous on Jun 12, 2008...Why does race have to enter into it? It doesnt matter what color he was....he was a criminal,..he fired @ a police officer and he paid the price for it. Thank GOD the officer wasnt seriously injured.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Bryan on Jun 12, 2008 at 09:49 AM
If police wait to get shot first. We would soon run out of police Officers in Bryan and the US. You pull a gun on me in Bryan. I am not waiting to see if you shot and kill me first. I will pull a trigger as soon as I See a Deadly Weapon. I am not the Police. Thugs also have the latest weapons and thugs use body armor. You have been watching to much TV if you think body armor works like on TV. US Troops In Iraq also have Body armor with steel plates and are injured and Killed. Some of the Bryan gang banger trash have gone back to the Hospital to re shot a victim. Shot early in the day. The hospital was full of police and people from the other shooting assassination hits in Bryan that day. It did not stop them from shooting a person at the hospital in Bryan. Remember if you see it on tv. It does not make it Real.

Posted by: the Doctor Location: Bryan on Jun 12, 2008 at 09:19 AM
The man killed was white. So what is your point? Does this change all the hateful things stated eariler about "hood rat" coming from Bryan? Does this change all the nasty things you said about how he deserved this? Does this change that you are arming yourself to protect your families from the dredded menances that you perceive now that you know that he is white? you all make me sick.

Posted by: bb Location: bcs on Jun 12, 2008 at 06:29 AM
Well good job Caldwell pd. I think the police should not fire until fired upon!! If this was Bryan PD, they would have shot him dead before even seeing a gun. Too many times the police in bryan shoot first ask later. Police are armed with the latest body armor and weapons. If someone is shooting at a police officer, thats no questions asked, kill the idiot. But just carrying a gun on you is legal, if you have the permit. Bryan cops are trigger happy. Wait till they shoot at you. most criminals dont have the brass to do it, and can be arrested.

I am a Captain with the Marshal's Office here and although I don't know Officer Hignight I have known your Chief of Police, Paul Lilly, and have called him a close friend for 20 years. He is a dedicated law enforcement professional that I have spent countless hours working with. He is not someone who would use deadly force unless it was absolutely neccessary. This man may have had many personal issues which drove him to act the way he did. The simple truth is he, like all of the rest of us, are accountable for our actions. Especially when they endanger the public at large. These men risk their lives on a daily basis because they feel a responsibility to the citizens of their community to "protect and serve". Their actions in this case were absolutely justified and the citizens of Caldwell should be grateful for their dedication and service.

People will thank about doing crime in this Town again. Bryan PD shot one and killed one. A few years back and things change to the better for months in the Bryan ghettos. This fast acting Officer may have saved a few other people from being crime victims also. Judging from the Comments. Great Police Work and Dispatching. Texas Ranger get the case Together so they people can put it behind them. D.A. give this one a No bill. Outstanding Law Enforcement Team Work! True Effective Police Work!

Bet your're the whiner who opposes a juvenile curfew and condons vandelism. It would be like one of y'all make this a personal agenda against the CPD. It's time to grow up and mature a little. Unless you were one of the victims of the robbery or personally involved in the chase and shoot out, you have no clue and at best are making stupid assumptions. It's a tragic situation for all involved and has nothing to do with regenade thug wannabees who run to mommy and have their own bias against the P.D.

Well its good that everyone has different opinions. The fact is that no one is perfect, the incident that happened only GOD knows why. All prayers go to the officer that did his job in protecting innocent lives and to the suspects three yr old daughter that one day she will ask for her dad. There's faults in everyone and thats something everyone should relize before saying things that are hurtful and not making a point across to solving the bicker with one another. Its better to listen and learn from mistakes of others.

Hey Anonymous... You sound like an ex-cop that could not make it. Instead you harass us on the sidewalks. Go Drink and Drive - and remember the good old "pole days"... You should know alot about "Big Headed Police Ofc" since you GAVE IT sooo much... I hear that this Ofc Hignight was a United States Marine, who after rescuing a small child injuried in Iraq by a road side bomb - donated blood so she could live.. He has been a noted community oriented police officer, saving a small 4 y/o child that was wondering down hwy 36 in the middle of the freaking hwy... Lets name the street behind Walmart. Cougan Hignight Lane. So you see Ms. Anonymous, "sticks and stones may break our bones", "BUT, Ofc Hignight will protect our children from the crooks"

Well I have read all the comments I agree with some of them but I honestly think that if this town comes together we can sure get rid of so many crimes that go around here. I am also thankful for the officer that put up his life for this community honestly I have seen alot of improvement here in Caldwell with so many new officers in our town, & I am not someone to badly judge people I will just leave it in the hands of GOD. And just try to enjoy everyday GOD gives me and my family. Thanx to the officer for doin his job. I also have kids & I would hate to see somthin bad happen to them I am happy we have officers that really do care for CALDWELL!!

Two cops shot the robber, not just one. They both must have seen the threat, besides, witnesses all over the place also saw what happened.

You should know that there were two officers involved here, and both apparently fired back at the bad guy, - according to the Burleson County Newspaper. So, to the doubter, whatever your problem is with Officer Hignight, know that a second Officer reacted the same way, after seeing the same thing. That should speak volumes.

Everyone on here only gives an opinion based on what the media has told you. I personally know the suspect and they have failed to inform the public that he had mental health issues, was disabled, recently divorced, and disturbed. He also left behind a 3 year old daughter who never knew that her daddy was that way. Someone has to tell that little girl her daddy is no longer alive. The man was also in and out of mental institutions over the last year. I commend the officers for doing what they were trained to do. The situation could have been far worse had innocent lives been taken as well. My prayers go out to everyone involved in this horrible matter.

Well..........Personally I think I would prefer a cop to be on the scene of a crime as quick as they most possible could be, big head and all. Ya know, people are SO quick to judge........ why can't some just keep negative comments to themselve. I truely wish KBTX would just take away the commenting section.

i watched as a man died on my front lawn. i am minister of Christ and felt helpless as events unfolded. i saw the look on the officer's face as he dealt with what he was forced to do. i began to pray, for the officers to have peace, that they would come to know the Lord Jesus Christ, that the wounded officer would be ok. i prayed for the family of the man lying on my lawn. and i began to pray for a spiritual awakening that would cause the christians in america to see that without continuous effectual prayer, we are open to the severe consequences of a sin filled world. i thanked God that my wife went shopping and arrived home late and that i stayed inside instead of working in the back yard. we had prayed that very morning for protection for us and our home. God changed our schedule so that we would not be put at risk. there are other people out there like the one who ended up on my lawn, i believe we christians know many of them. we can make a difference, but will we? will you?

In desperate times people do desperate things. I am not condoning what this person did. It was very wrong but when people are desperate this is what happens. And TEXAN, who ever you are, you are the most insenitive idiot I have seen blog in a while. I am glad that the officer defended his own life but no one should ever rejoice over the death of another human. I will not even rejoice over when God takes you out.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured police officer. Best wishes for a very speedy recovery. I thank you for the difficult and dangerous job you perform. To the low life, pieces of garbage that commit crimes like this and endanger our fine police officers and hard working citizens, let this serve as a warning. You could be the next "suspect killed." The police are not the only ones toting a firearm in this area. There are hundreds of law abiding armed citizens that have a concealed handgun license and I can assure you they are perfectly prepared to use force defend their families from garbage like you. I am 84 years old and I never thought I would live to see the day when crime would be so rampant. It is a very sad day when someone will try to kill the very people way pay to protect us.

Great job by the police officer. I am glad that the police officer was not injured and that one more of society's parasites is dead.

I hope that this is not the begining of more bad things with the prices on everything now some people can't survive like they used to

Officer Cougan Hignight was the officer who was shot according to The Eagle - anybody heard from anyone who the guy killed was yet? And Local resident, no one said the house was on Hwy 36 - they said the grocery store was. Texan: there are ghetto rats in every town around it seems. Even in smaller towns than Caldwell. It is a sign of the times I fear.

Good Shot CPD. Some of the ghetto thugs Bryan shot made it. Great Police work. You stopped this person fast. Thugs will thank about trying this again in Caldwell.

I lived around the corner from where the shooting occured. I am so very glad to be FROM Caldwell. My house was broken into several times and it was right across the street from the Police Dept.

I commend our law enforcement for taking care of this situation. I would like for this community to be known as one with zero tolerance for criminals. Thanks to the officers, and I pray the injured officer is OK.

How about raising fuel prices a little more, to where the average working person can't afford to get to work and then everybody is robbing everybody except for the gas companies. This is going to start happening more and more since people are pushed to the limits financially and will do whatever it takes to survive. I bought a vehicle 1 1/2 years ago and budgeted fuel costs. Now fuel is twice the price and there is no end in site. GOD bless America!!!

Wow! Even small town Caldwell has ghetto rats! Good thing this one was exterminated before he killed someone.

The house is on Hwy 21 rather than Hwy 36.

Your story on the caldwell officer is wrong. The cash office at brookshire bros. was robbed and the officer chased him to the monestary on 21 west where the shooting ocured.

Whatever gave the shooter the idea that he could rob the grocery store in broad daylight, shoot at the cops and think he could get away? Thank God for the peace officers that put their lives on the line to protect us from creeps like that.
