Texas Department of Transportation employees spent the last few months, getting an earful.

"Most of the people in Grimes County don't want it at all, don't want it at all," said a speaker at a Trans Texas Corridor hearing in February.

Now, it looks like all the opposition to the TTC/ I-69 project has paid off.

Initial studies had the super highway running right through Walker and Grimes County.

Those areas are no longer under consideration. Instead, TXDOT says it will use existing roads.

"Landowners said no we don't want this and we're not gonna take it," said Charlie Wendt.

Wendt's 280 acres were in the original study area.

"I think it wrangled some people, and I know it did me, is the arrogance of saying we're gonna take it," said Wendt.

Much of the land in Grimes County could have been in the TTC path, including historic Shiro Cemetery.

"That was one of the main reasons that we were worried to death about this corridor coming through this way, because that's where all of our family is buried," said Kathie Wendt.

Gravesites and a legacy would have been uprooted.

"Thank goodness someone listened, prayer works," said Kathie.

Grimes County Judge Betty Shiflett, says the decision proves democracy works too.

"It has renewed my faith in the democratic system. The people spoke and they listened. It's a great history lesson," said Shiflett.

Looks like Navasota welfare fever is in most part of the county now. Some needs to call CDC.

Wow, the people posting here either don't know what they are talking about are have real short memories. Jimmy are you forgetting about the brazos county district judge removed in the E-mail case for having an affair with the female lawyer, are the one fueding with district attorney. How about the jailer let go for allowing the inmates to drink beer with thier girlfriends. And G.G. for you're information only one school district out of four in Grimes county was unacceptable. Iola and Anderson was well above average. Exemplery or somthing like that. Many of us in rural Grimes county or proud of our schools and value education. My wife of 40 years and I made sure all 3 of our chidren went to college and all 3 recieved their masters. I think you are probably new to the area. Don't judge the county by what you see there in White Hall.

"Grimes also does not understand that with a paved roads you need new local businesses to aid in things like Super gas staions, repairs for vehicles, shipping points, restaurants etc." And the TTC plan deliberately insures that NONE of the above will benefit the local population; Facilities along the toll corridor are required to be exclusively owned and operated by the Toll Authority BY LAW. These businesses will pay no local taxes BY LAW. ONLY State highways (no local, county, or FM roads) will have access to the corridor, insuring that the employees will come almost exclusively from major towns far from the facilities... Paved roads are one thing; this atrocity is something else.

I'm wanting to learn more about this. From my understanding and correct me if I'm wrong, the road going through Grimes and other counties will be a toll road? Local jobs would be created during the construction if you happen to work for a contractor that gets the job? There would be no entries/exits to local communties and businesses? Foreign governments will own/operate/maintain these roads? Thank you for any information/facts you can share.

Grimes county paved roads are state roads paid for by the working people and Business of Texas. Grimes county roads are dirt. Paid by the welfare people of Grimes County. I also drive my kids in Grimes County to show them how welfare and a poor education does not support a family. Grimes you people keep talking about no paved roads, welfare, Bad schools and arrested county employees. Can someone take away the voters cards. Voting IQ test need for Grimes. Failed local school boards and county Governments are voted in by the people of the Grimes County not the state. Why would anyone keep voting in Losers and thief's over and over? The people of the state pay for the Lone star card and welfare. Grimes you people think we like paying money for your mistakes. I am also Amused by Ignorance of this County.

People In Grimes County just do not understand Government ratings and facts. A good job and good education lead to a lower rate of welfare. No Sheriff, District Attorney, County commissioner, County Auditor, Deputy Sheriff, Jailers, Chief Deputy, have been removed from office for being corrupt in the last 10yrs 20yrs 30yrs. In Brazos County, this is not the case for Grimes. People truly are clueless to the words the state and fed. government uses. Heavily economically disvantaged Aka most people are on welfare more than are not. That the people of texas give this county more money than comes out of it. Academically unacceptable by TEA. The worst rate the state of texas can give a school. AKA you are not learning. Grimes also does not understand that with a paved roads you need new local businesses to aid in things like Super gas staions, repairs for vehicles, shipping points, restaurants etc. Poverty and ingnorance is no way to live a life. Expecting others to pay for it is pathetic.

For those of you who think the TTC would bring growth to the region are sadly uninformed. It's too much of a challenge to educate you on the negative implications of the TTC (stage one of the NAFTA toll road). You can research this issue for yourself. As a 20 year resident of Grimes county I can tell you that I'll take the low property taxes and beautiful countryside over any surrounding county. Apparently lots of folks enjoy driving on weekends from Richards to Montgomery on 149. Lots of motorcycles, bikes, and convertibles. I'm all for eliminating the generational welfare system we tax payers pay for, but slamming Grimes county does no one any good. The TTC has nothing to do with that issue. By the way....there are plenty of "paved" roads out of Grimes county for those that want to hit the road. See ya!

Posted by: Old Timer Location: Iola on Jun 17, 2008 at 09:50 AM
Will someone please tell me what has welfare and corrupt politicians have to do with the defeat of the TTC. In my own humble opinion, those of you who are throwing dirt on Grimes county most likely stood to gain a lot money from it, at the expense of we residents. I really would not be surprised if those that are critisizing us,are following the instructions from the ones trying to push TTC down our throats. I suppose my mother was right, there are people who, when they can't win an argument based on facts will resort to slander, what ever it may be.

You know, personally, not many of the people I vote for in Grimes County ever win the elections. I hate the "good old boy system" myself. If you think you can do an honest job as an elected official in Grimes, then please move here and run! Some of us would truly appreciate that. Again, I don't know about the welfare statistics in Grimes. The people that I know around here work very hard for what they have without government assistance and will share whatever they have to help someone out. It is so completely offensive for you to call all Grimes Countians "welfare recipients" when alot of us are also working hard and getting very little to only have it taken away and given to someone who probably shouldn't be getting it in the first place. I'm just as mad about that. But welfare is everywhere, including Brazos County, where I lived for years. If you all want a change, stop slandering Grimes County and do something that will actually benefit all of us.

I'll bet money that in November Grimes county votes for some of the same elected officials that keep hiring some of the same corrupt employees. I guess we will know in November if that welfare state of mind continues. Will someone please get these people a Map and paved road to a Job.

Posted by: Old Timer Location: Iola on Jun 16, 2008 at 01:49 PM
Anyone thinking Brazos county doesn't have poverty or welfare needs to drive down M.L.K.,and as for corrupt law officers and politicions you here about them because we will not put up with that kind of behavior and we wii remove them, I recall reading many scandalous things about Brazos County officials.

Do you really believe a road is going to get people off welfare? Unfortuantely, it is not. The people on welfare have been taught all their lives by their parents and their parents before them how to use the system. It's all they know. Get rid of welfare completely and let them get hungry, perhaps they would be willing to work.I'm all for helping people but not handicapping them. Which is exactly what welfare does. I'm with the person that is wondering what this proposed highway has to do with welfare. Highways don't change people's hearts. Hardtimes, being hungry, figuring out how to make it yourself, those things do! Thank God they aren't putting in this highway, once again taking from those whom have worked. Please....these problems are not solved by spending more money. Maybe taking it away, is more in line. This highway has nothing to do with it.

I lived in Grimes and found a paved road out of the County. Grimes County still needs a paved road out of poverty. This road would have been a way for the people to get a job. A good education. Help put a end to Local Government corruption. Aid in electing people to run the schools that understand welfare is not the way to go and having a Low rated school just feeds into a welfare system for Grimes. Grimes county needs to understand why the are a place for a new trash dump now.

Posted by: Re Location: wellborn on Jun 15, 2008 at 07:11 PM
Wesson welfare is the thing Grimes county loves to keep. Anything that would bring a end to it is bad for Grimes and good for Texas. A road that is paved to the future may end welfare and a ignorant Welfare life style paid buy working Texans. Remember we all can not get welfare. It is true someone has to work. It is also bad to vote for people that are criminals that take Tax payers money. Does this help answer your question?

I have homes in both Grimes and Brazos counties. Some of this property has been in my family since the mid 1800's. Some of the property being considered by TXDOT is ours. I feel that if losing some of the property to gain things in terms of education, better work base, better roads is needed. Unfortunately there is a lot of corruption in the county government. Some of those removed were relatives. Some schools are rated at the lowest rating the state can give. The federal and state government have this county listed as economically disadvantaged which is a polite term for welfare. Grimes County just doesn't have the education or knowledge to compete with a world economy. I will gladly donate some of my land to help the county out of poverty and off welfare. The ignorance and corruption of the county has been overwhelming for decades. To help overcome some of this, Grimes county needs to help its poverty stricken residents. Lets not be selfish. Lets stop welfare in Grimes County.

Posted by: Wesson Location: Roans Prairie on Jun 15, 2008 at 12:11 AM
Again, I don't know why welfare is even being discussed in this story. Most of us being threatened with losing our land, which we paid for with REAL MONEY, are honest, hard-working tax payers. I doubt you can purchase property with lonestar cards. But then again, some of you seem to know everything. The mere mention of our school system and welfare system in relation to this article is so petty. Some of you obviously didn't have anything to lose and no care for those who did.

Posted by: LL Location: Bryan on Jun 14, 2008 at 07:44 PM
You would thank someone was going to coming out with a new Government aid program. Any paved road in this county is a good idea. If you do not work I guess a dirt roads are fine also.

Posted by: Sam Location: Shiro on Jun 14, 2008 at 12:30 PM
Hey Smith....take a dirt road out of here.I love it here.Who urinated in your Wheaties? Sounds like a good therapist needs to be visited.Sucks to be bitter.

With the education system in most grimes county school districts having the worst rating possible in the state of Texas, the high rate of welfare and lone star card recipients. The federal government rating them economically disadvantaged county aka welfare. The county's decades of voting in officials that are corrupt including judicial system, sheriffs, DA's, and a sheriffs office that hires deputies and jailers that keep getting arrested it is easy to understand why some people may not want growth in the county. They may have to actually get a job, education and work. One can only hope they can rejoice one day when they get anything other than subtandard ratings in their school. Poverty and welfare and ignorance are not things to be proud of. One good thing you can say about Grimes County. Taxes are low and the roads are made of dirt. Increase the size of the welfare checks maybe we can get a few more tax dollars. Then again the county government would find a way to steal it.

Good job Grimes co. But, still support the 391 comm. in Grimes co. due to the other evils that are out there....

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 13, 2008 at 09:28 PM
Who cares about the growth of Brazos co.why should Grimes suffer so they can have jobs, bcs is a throw away city, people come and they go. If it was not for a&m the city would just be a dot on the map if that much. KUTOS to the people of Grimes co.and Thank you

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Bryan on Jun 13, 2008 at 08:55 PM
Hurray, congrats to a team effort but also for someone listening to the citizens. Wish Bryan would do that! Remember that next time you vote! Afterall people we put these individuals in office. Good job

Posted by: thank goodness Location: college station on Jun 13, 2008 at 05:26 PM
If you want a better job move. It's wrong to take land that belongs to someone else. People work hard and some times years to have what they have. No one including any goverment entity should be able to take it or force you to sell it to them for what they tell you its worth. I'm happy for the folks that this would've effected. If Bryan College Station residents want better paying jobs, leave move to Houston or Dallas, deal with their traffic and everything else. You can't have your cake and eat it too! This is a great place to live. Some people are just never happy.

It good to see the new highway is not coming to grimes. We would have even more trash trucks then.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Bryan Resident on Jun 13, 2008 at 03:34 PM
Well wish the city of Bryan would listen and set an example. They do what they want and the citizens concerns don't mean a thing. This includes city of Bryan and the school system. I am glad someone has a success story.

Posted by: Kay Lynn Location: Navasota on Jun 13, 2008 at 12:09 PM
Thank you for listening. We are jumping for joy!!! I don't understand people in this poll saying they disagree. I guess they did not have land that had been in their family for years that the state was going to take. Maybe if it was their land, they would feel differently.

Democracy at work people, it's a real beautifull thing. It's a good day to be an American, but it's a great day to be a Texan and a citizen of Brazos county.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 13, 2008 at 09:31 AM
Denying the TTC decreases the future growth of the Brazos Valley. We already do not have enough jobs, so lets just further exastrabate the situation.

Well, Anonymous, I guess the "Trash trucks" will have to make do. FINALLY--Score one for the little people. It's about time.

The Trash trucks are going to waste time and Gas getting to the new trash dump in Grimes now.
