Preliminary Crash Report on PHI Chopper Released

A preliminary report on the PHI helicopter crash provides little insight into the cause of the accident that left four people dead.

It could be nearly a year before the final report is released by the National Transportation and Safety Board. Three PHI crew members and their patient died in the crash June 8.

According to the report, Air Med 12 powered up at just after 2:44 a.m. that morning. It lifted off from Huntsville Memorial Hospital seconds before 2:47 a.m.

Seconds later, its last coordinates were recorded through the chopper's GPS. It crashed two-and-a-half miles from those last coordinates, with debris being scattered more than 600 feet from the initial impact.

The NTSB says visibility on that early morning was 10 miles.
