Richard Pryor's wife says the actor/comic
died with a smile on his face.
His business manager says Pryor died of a heart attack this
morning after being taken to the hospital from his Los Angeles-area
home. He had been ill for years with multiple sclerosis.
Jennifer Pryor called him "very, very, very amazing" and
credited Pryor with opening doors for many people.
His audacious style influenced a wide range of stand-up artists,
including Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams and David Letterman.
Pryor had a series of hit comedies in the '70s and '80s and
became one of the highest paid stars in Hollywood.
He was also one of the first black performers to have enough leverage to cut his own Hollywood deals.
In 1983, he signed a 40 (m) million dollar, five-year contract with Columbia Pictures.
Former Minnesota senator and anti-war activist Eugene McCarthy has also died.
His son Michael says McCarthy died in his sleep at the
Washington retirement home where he had lived for the past few
McCarthy challenged President Lyndon Johnson for the 1968
Democratic nomination during growing debate over the Vietnam War.
The challenge led to Johnson's withdrawal from the race.
The former college professor ran for president five times in
all, including 1992.
McCarthy got less than one percent of the vote in 1992 in New
Hampshire, the state where he helped change history 24 years
That's when his surprisingly strong showing embarrassed
President Johnson, who withdrew and threw his support to Hubert
McCarthy was 89.
