Woman Dies in County Custody; Overdose Suspected

A College Station woman has died while in the custody of Brazos County Sheriff's deputies.

Sheriff Chris Kirk tells News Three the unidentified woman died of an apparent drug overdose.

Deputies were called to transport the unidentified woman to Austin State Hospital.

At the time, she was being treated at College Station Medical Center.

Kirk says Mental Health, Mental Retardation officials signed an order of commitment, clearing the county to take the woman to Austin State Hospital.

When they arrived in Austin, she was unresponsive.

The woman was taken by ambulance to an Austin hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Autopsy results are pending.

Kirk says multiple investigations are going on, including an internal inquiry within the sheriff's department.

The Department of Public Safety and Texas Rangers are also investigating.
