It's not very often that you get a gift that will impact and last the rest of your life. But one Bryan man got just that thanks to the generous gifts of those in our medical community.

Determined might be the best way to describe 59 year old Mario Lozano. The Mexico native had his right leg amputated above the knee after complications from diabetes.

With no insurance, he thought he'd be wheelchair bound for the rest of his life, until Central Texas Orthotics and Prosthetics gave him a prosthetic leg free of charge.

"I'm feeling really good and really grateful that I'm able to walk again. I know I won't be able to walk like I did before, but I'm going to do my best to try to be able to walk," said Lozano.

It's only been two days, and already Lozano is well on his walk to walking again.

"He's highly motivated. He told me that he wants to be sure that he's here for his son and I think he has kind of a new outlook on life," said physical therapist, Shannon Herring.

"He came to our office and we meet him and his motivation and zeal made him a good candidate to receive a prosthesis," said Jonathan Cassens with Central Texas Orthotics and Prosthetics.

Lozano will continue his rehabilitation at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation Center for free.

"I'm grateful for what they've done for me. To the doctor and that did my operations and the nurses and staff that helped. I was in a coma for 3 weeks and everybody helped," said Lozano.

"He's doing exceptionally well for somebody that just had an amputation done 3 months ago. He's already walking in crutches," said Herring.

If Lozano has his way, he won't be needing those crutches for long.

It seems people really are in the giving spirit this year. Mr. Lozano's prosthesis cost over $12,000 and St Joseph's doctors are providing free medical care.

Lozano's therapist says he should be able to walk on his own in about 3 to 4 months.
