The neonatal intensive care unit (ICU) at College Station Medical Center is open ahead of schedule because of a newborn in need. The neonatal ICU wasn't scheduled to open until the new year, but when a set of twin boys were born prematurely on Thursday the facility decided to open early.

According to the Med, one of the boys was transferred to the unit from St. Joseph's in Bryan. The transfer took place because the boy needed help breathing from a ventilator.

In the past there was no local neonatal ICU so newborns needing special care had to be flown to Houston for treatment. The family is thankful their holiday could be spent at home.

Doctors at The Med say the baby is in great condition and should be off the ventilator by the new year.
