Martin Luther King, Jr. Home to be Dedicated in Honor of Pruitts
Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity will dedicate the house sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank and local churches, businesses, and civic organizations for the Porch Family. The house is commonly called the MLK House because it is to be dedicated in memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. and in honor of Mell and Willie Pruitt.
The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 16, 2006 at 1002 Dansby Street in Bryan. At the ceremony, the keys will be given to Candra Porch and her children, the 105th family in Bryan/College Station to build and buy their own home with Habitat for Humanity.
“The family has been saving and working hard, something that’s not easy when you have four kids,” says Mandi Brown, Special Programs Coordinator for Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity. “They will get to see the results of all their hard work and finally get to move into a new four bedroom home.”
Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating poverty housing from the community by bringing together individuals, churches, businesses and other organizations to build simple, decent homes for low-income families. It is simply a matter of conscience and action.
The Porch family has already completed more than the required 400 hours of sweat equity. They currently live in a small three bedroom home that is in poor condition and in a dangerous neighborhood. Ms. Porch has been working in the Food Service Department at Bryan I.S.D. for nearly two years. She will move into her new home along with her three sons and one daughter.
