If you drive near campus you might see a familiar building. Our Saviour Lutheran Church has been on Tauber street since the 1950's. But the church didn't start here. 70 years ago it was founded as a student based ministry.
Our Saviour started worshipping at the campus YMCA building in the 1930's. 20 years later they moved into their first sanctuary.
"This was the only Lutheran church from the old American Lutheran church in Bryan, college station at the time," member John Blasienz said.
Blasienz joined the congregation in 1958, four years after the groundbreaking. It was in the sanctuary his children were baptized and confirmed. Now John is moving on, along with his church family, into a new building.
"Well there's some nostalgia involved in it yes, you hate to leave a site that you've been in so long," Blasienz said. "Yet the anticipation and the excitement is really great."
Church clergy say this has been the reaction of most of the congregation.
"I compare it to a grieving process they died to one place but for the most part everyone is very excited about the move," Senior Pastor Erich Schaefer said.
On November 6th the congregation moved into a new church on Woodcreek drive. The new church can house more people, more cars, and more amenities, and in the next five years the church hopes to build a sanctuary.
But for now the congregation is preparing for a big day. On Sunday the new church will be dedicated.
A celebration that enhances the congregation's excitement.
"They're excited to be in this neighborhood, they're excited to be in a new space, so there's an air of excitement every Sunday," Pastor Sue Beall said.
The dedication ceremony will take place at 10:45 a.m. Sunday morning at Our Saviour Lutheran Church at 1001 Woodcreek Drive.
