Brazos Co. Road Projects Rise in Cost

The cost of a four lane, divided expressway has gone way up, which is pinching the pockets of Brazos County Judge Randy Sims.

"TXDoT missed their estimate, as a lot of us do on a lot of our building projects that were put together five, six, seven, eight, nine years ago," said Sims.

Sims has received word that the expansion project set to begin in June will cost $187,000 more than first thought, and that does not include further costs for utility relocations along the highway between FM 159 and the Navasota River. TXDoT has told Sims another $600,000 may be owed when it's all said and done.

"It's tax dollars anyway you cut it," Sims said, "and very fortunately, we have got some discretionary funds that we can pull this out of."

And Highway 6 isn't the only costly project. Highway 21 work that's just been completed came in over the projected costs, which means the county has ponied up $139,000 more to the state.

But if you think the high price tags has the county worried, think again. They're looking to what those roads will bring to the area.

"It really benefits us because if, in fact, a warehouse wants to come in here, they're not going to come in here if you've got two lane roads in and out of your community," said Sims.

It's a business boom the county is counting on all roads leading to.

Before they begin work on that last stretch of Highway 6 at the Grimes County line, the department will do some work on the section from Texas World Speedway to FM 159. That work is slated to start in March.
