Congressman Chet Edwards spent the morning thanking Aggie AgriLife researchers, but also addressed rumors of vice presidential consideration.

Edwards got a tour of the Borlaug Institute Tuesday morning on the Texas A&M campus. District 17's rep helped get $23 million of funding for research into everything from farming to national security in 2007.

The big topic surrounding Edwards has been Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi suggesting Edwards for Senator Barack Obama's vice presidential nominee.

"That's not a decision I make," Edwards said Tuesday. "There's only one person that will make that. That's Senator Obama. I'm staying focused on working for our district, trying to make a difference for the people of Central Texas. We'll let the other chips fall where they may."

On the question of whether he had been contacted by the Obama campaign about the vice presidential nomination, Edwards was mum.

"I really have to defer on those questions out of respect for the Obama campaign, which has asked that they be able to oversee this process," Edwards said.

When news broke of the Pelosi comments on a Newsweek blog suggesting Edwards should be considered by the Democratic nominee, his office said no contact had been made between the two sides.
