The city of College Station responded Thursday night to the city of Bryan's lawsuit againt College Station over a jointly-owned landfill.

The landfill partnership between the two cities has been in place for 18 years and the City of College Station says they will continue to operate the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Authority as usual. This despite the City of Bryan filing litigation on Monday alleging they have been denied the opportunity to have a say in BVSWMA.

Bryan city leaders also say they have been left off the contract for the future Twin Oaks landfill in Grimes County.

Bryan officials say if they are not on the contract they would be left vulnerable to suits if accidents where to occur on the site.

In a news conference Thursday night - College Station City Manager Glenn Brown says the city's charter won't allow another city to supervise College Station staff even if it's a joint supervision.

Brown also says even having the city of Bryan's name on the contract for the new jointly owned Twin Oaks landfill in Grimes County would drive up construction costs on the project.

Brown says city attorneys are working to find a resolution.

He says College Station will be sending to Bryan for their review the deeds to convey an undivided half interest in the Grimes county landfill. Brown also says College Station also offered to make amendments to the joint agreement that would release the City of Bryan of any liability if workers got hurt at the future site. He says Bryan never responded.

In the meantime, Brown says bid contracts go out August 11 to build the future Twin Oaks landfill despite Bryan's litigation. He says there's only two years of life left in the current Rock Prairie landfill and delays in opening the future Grimes county site would be unhealthy for either city.

I always find this feud quite ridiculous, this "Bryan's better/CS is better" shtick. If it weren't for the signs stating it, you wouldn't be able to tell when you left one city to enter the next. "Slums" are found in both cities. I am aware of the "North Bryan" area. I'm also aware of the areas around Wellborn & Holloman & the housing around there as well as a lot of the homes in the North Gate area. Nice, richer neighborhoods exist in both cities, too. Heck, the argument could be made that Bryan is far more compassionate & humane considering the city is home to the area's few shelters, those for animals, men, women & children. But then again, there is that annual event where aggies go into the community (Bryan & College Station) and help the less fortunate. It's just silly to fight over such things. It's time wasted that could have been used helping those you put down.

If more people would recycle and reduce their waste, this wouldn't be as much of an issue.

Communication is the key....

Posted by: Fred Location: Bryan on Jul 8, 2008 at 11:13 AM
I have neither read the contract nor do I have a desire to read it. The one thing that I do not understand is the lack of communication...if people would communicate these problems could be avoided. Who is at fault...BOTH CITIES!! Communicate and do what is right. If my children were acting like this I would take them to the woodshed and warm up their backside. You are supposed to be adults...ACT LIKE IT!!! BOTH CITIES!!

The water had nothing to do with management. We had enough water to last all day until a transfer line break could be repaired. You see, this is how cities are suppose to help each other. Unfortunate that we can not help the many North side Bryan residents that have sewage back up on a regular basis because of aging municipal systems. This is the mismanagement that has hurt Bryan for years. I hope it gets better for you guys.

I know that we have problems in Bryan, but how would CS have been built if it were not for the trash of Bryan---for example, homes concrete workers, brick layers, new home trash clean up, yards mowed, roads built, buildings & businesses built? These people are great to use for their services to get CS the "Modern City" that you live in then you complain about the people that live in Bryan. All of the people are not trash. Do you think that you are that perfect of a city? Why don't you the citizens of College Station call the INS and report all the illegals and then see what get's built in your "Perfect City".

Lisa I would like to say you are wrong. We just do not have effective code enforcement. BISD is also having some issues with its 26% Drop out rate. The Ghettos are the fastest thing growing in Bryan NOW.

I wish the City of Bryan could match all the City services of College Station. This would keep them busy for awhile instead of wasting their time in filing a suit.

Posted by: Lisa Location: Neither College Station nor Bryan on Jul 5, 2008 at 02:13 PM
This is exactly what I would expect out of Bryan, a city infested with welfare and food stamp ghetto trash. They always feel entitled. Lets put the dump right in the middle of Sue Haswell Park. The residents of Bryan would never even notice. They trashed and polluted their city long ago.

Bryan should withdraw from this project. It is really not needed. We could just bulldoze some HUD complexes on the west side and use this for a city landfill. Saving the city money and reducing crime. Maybe then some of our welfare population would relocate to College Station. Its a win win for us.

I cannot remember=== where did CS dump their trash back in 1950 & 1960. I know that Bryan had a landfill on Pleasant Hill Rd off Sandy Point until it was closed and move to Rock Prairie.

Did you miss your "ride" on the late night of the 2nd or early A.M. of the 3rd?

I wish you had said that before Bryan gave YOU and CS hundreds of gallons of water a few weeks ago,so that you could flush you S@#$% down the tiolet !!!! Manage your city better, ha!

Posted by: Law Suit? Why? Location: CS on Jul 3, 2008 at 10:07 PM
In a real partnership there is a thing called mediation. I am sure there is a section in there contract that talks about this so a law suit does not arrise. I never heard Bryan wanting to mediate. That is why it took CS by surprise. In a partnership or corp I dont believe a partner would be around long if he handled his complaint with a law suit. I believe that Bryan just wanted some attention.

Glenn Brown is not the only one who needs to be investigated. Watkins and his crew also need to be looked at. None of them have ethics. Why are so many Bryan employees gone also? Bryan and CS have issues and they both are selfish and not interested in what best for entire community.

To anyone interested.. this is not about trash.!BTU made a good business deal, and mr White couldnt stand it. He had forgotten about their " going green " program ! Gas from a landfill' How could this be..!Its going to be nice to see these liars of college station squirming in the court room..Perjury.. Fraud..abuse of a public office ,are not those a criminal offense ? The College Station public need to follow this situation all the way to the next election ! Speaking of trash "Mr Maloney's public statement about wanting to build a "DAMN " Building ,reveals the arrogant attitudes being displayed by College Station Govt.

I'm reading a lot of comments about how College Staion is screwing Bryan over but have any of you actually looked or read this contract or the budget for this landfill. My guess is no, due to that as usual KBTX can not do the complete story by reviewing the terms and condition that show what the actually agreements says. Bryan sign the agreement and now wants to change it after doing so, so why did they agree to these terms to start with. And for all your information College Station covers the largest part of operating this landfill not BRyan or any other of the counties that dump here. So I'm all fro giving Bryan more say as long as they pay and equal amount as College Station to operate it but this is something they don't want to do

Posted by: Aggie Location: campus on Jul 3, 2008 at 01:19 PM
Can't wait til someone investigates Glenn Brown. why are so many CS employees pulling the plug? Can anyone say ethics? (Remember the police leutenant problem)

Posted by: Not Surprised Location: CS on Jul 3, 2008 at 12:51 PM
I completely agree with Hey Anonymous. Just look at Bryan's crime rate and streets. Not very pretty. Plus don't we CS tax payers give our left over taxes to Bryan. They owe us anyway!

Posted by: Charles Location: College Station on Jul 3, 2008 at 12:23 PM
It is about time that College Station accepts the fact that like Bryan you are a part of Brazos County and the College Station municipal officials should grow up. (Growing old is mandatory, Growing-up is voluntary). If you have things in your charter that prevents cooperation, they should be deleted. Waste products are a Brazos County problem, you do not have the exclusive privilege of excretment by the trash can. You should welcome a partner in the smelly problem. Come on College Station, GROW-UP.

Posted by: Justme Location: B/CS on Jul 3, 2008 at 11:35 AM
Just the thing that B/CS needs to go to court over! A pile of S**T

Posted by: Hey Anonymous Location: CS on Jul 3, 2008 at 10:56 AM
City of Bryan run landfill?? That would be a big mistake, Bryan can barely handle the problems that they face as a city. Bryan has a long way to go but are making small strides. Anyway we are only talking about a place to dump our trash. You know CS has a aggressive recycle program in place, maybe Bryan can learn a thing or two from its sister city instead of biting the very hand that feeds you.

Posted by: Robin Location: Bryan on Jul 3, 2008 at 10:43 AM
The bottom line is that College Station is looking out for themselves only...As usual! And sometimes it is not what you say but what you don't say. As far as Attorney for College Station being in “Conflict of Interest” It is clearly defined, not interpreted for an Attorney!

Whyyyy cant we all just get along......

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 3, 2008 at 09:29 AM
Keep up the hard work Bryan, show CS that they can't win this one- THEY DID BREAK THE LAW!!! I think they (CS) owe a lot to the City of Bryan and employess for trying to pull a fast one over us. Lets get this back to a PROPER PARTNERSHIP or become a City of Bryan run landfill.

Posted by: C Location: CS on Jul 3, 2008 at 09:11 AM
Its unfortunate that Mr. Brown and CS are not willing to honor their agreement with Bryan regarding the landfill. I suppose that if Bryan cannot have a say in the millions of dollars that are being spent on the existing and future landfills that CS should either buy them out or find an operator who can serve both entities.

Posted by: Jean Location: c.s. on Jul 3, 2008 at 08:34 AM
I think that it is terrible that two cities that are as connected as Byran and C. S. cannot come to an agreement using common sense and courtesy. law suits do no have to be filed every time there is a disagreement. What ever happened to "give and take"? I do not believe that the citizens of either city want the employees of either city making decisions of this type.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Wellborn on Jul 3, 2008 at 08:28 AM
I am tired of KBTX printing comments that ask for your opinion of things that we as citizens do not have enough knowledge to make a justified answer. The comments about the injured baby has hurt many people & 99% of the comments were from people who do not know the facts. If this "comment option" would have came out after the trial and after the charged person was given the right of time in court & found guilty or not, I could see this as being productive. Our Country's view on Christian values are becoming nonexistent, and that includes printing stuff that can be hurtful and was not necessary.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 3, 2008 at 06:39 AM
Not good to have someone try and take over is it.....

Posted by: hooks Location: bcs on Jul 3, 2008 at 06:24 AM
College Station once again turning the blame on Bryan. You left them out of the loop and violated the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management ACT!! This is cut and dry case and College Station will crawfish like usual. College Station WILL loose this one if it goes to court.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 3, 2008 at 01:31 AM
Bryan is also acting like a other area of Grimes-Navasota. Well one thing is true the look the same.

Posted by: I got a resolution! Location: CS on Jul 3, 2008 at 12:49 AM
Why don't we end the partnership with Bryan since CS has done all the work anyway. Then tell Bryan to go find a better place to dump there trash and then they can charge even more taxes to the residents. Learn to manage your city better.
