If those high gas prices are keeping you from traveling far this holiday weekend, we have some local events that are a lot of bang for the buck.

The party was started early at the Elizabeth Lutheran Church in Caldwell. They held a celebration including hamburgers, hot dogs, and ice cream as well as live music and an impressive fireworks display after dark. The Church is located on Highway 21 East.

-----

On the 4th, Jason Boland and The Stragglers will be out at Lake Bryan and on the fifth Rich O'Toole will be on stage after the fireworks at 9 p.m.

-----

On Independence Day, the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum will hold its annual "I love America" festivities, featuring the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra, fireworks and a flyover.

-----

Also on the 4th is Fireworks on the Brazos at Washington on the Brazos. There will be free Blue-Bell ice cream and, of course, fireworks galore.

-----

If fireworks and the night life aren't your thing or you just want to get the day started with some exercise, there's the Four on the Fourth Fun Run at Veterans Park starting at 7 a.m.

-----

After working up an appetite, head to the Millican Community Center's annual pancake breakfast which is from 8 until 11 a.m.

-----

Mt. Zion's Community Center's 55th Annual free bar-b-que celebration.
Friday. This will be an all day event beginning around 10:30 A.M. located West of Hwy 21 to FM 696 down CR 324.

-----

The Brazos Heritage Society is having another old-fashioned 4th Celebration at Heritage Park in historic Bryan. "Proud Country" will be entertaining with classic country music. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. with the flag raising ceremony by the American Sojourners in historic Patriot costume. The children's Patriot Parade begins at 10:30 a.m.

-----

For a complete listing of events on or around the 4th, check out our Community Calendar.

I enjoyed the evening at GBL up till the point they turned on a giant 4 unit floodlights powered by a diesel generator. I have no idea what the hell they were thinking. People on the north side are sitting on their blankets, enjoying the symphony, watching the sunset and go away then someone turns on a big diesel generator and flooded everyone facing the library. The sound of the generator drowning out the symphony, the smell of diesel, having to put your sunglasses back on after watching the sun go down because stadium intensity lights are pointed directly at you. I honestly have no idea what the hell they were thinking and I am assuming they were maybe not. Really a big dent in an otherwise enjoyable evening.

Bobby I could not state it any better so I am not going to even try. I can train a monkey to jump up and down and wave a flag. I cannot a monkey to pick up the constitution and read it.

Caldwell's 4th of July celebration is the best!!! It doesn't cost anything. Parking is free and the atmosphere is fun & friendly. To top it off, the firework display is better than any seen in the Brazos Valley including the GBL display.

We definitely saw an increase in patriotic sentiment immediately after 9/11. But that sentiment did not seem to translate into civic attitude and action. Instead of being willing to sacrifice and pay for war for instance, people complain that their taxes are too high. Instead of giving up or cutting down, consumers were more intent on spending their income on material goods. Even though we knwe there was a need for energy alternatives and conservation, we continued to buy gas-guzzling vehicles and only started switching to more energy-efficient transportation when we got upset about high gas prices. Although people complain about Congress and the presidency, voter turnout in the United States remains one of the lowest among democratic nations. Patriotism is much more than just where one places their hands during the national anthem or whether or not one has a flag decal on the back window of their car or truck. Patriotism is about taking action for the good of the community.
