Texas A&M President Robert Gates touted the university's efforts in recruiting more African Americans at a summit on Friday.

The summit is taking place Friday and Saturday and being sponsored by the Black Former Student Network and the Association of Former Students.

The summit's theme is “Bringing Together the Right People for the Right Purpose, to Formulate the Right Plan." The focus of the summit is to get an update on the status of African American students at Texas A&M.

In a speech Friday morning Gates said the school is on the right track. He pointed out a 35 percent increase in African American freshman enrollment last year.
