Republicans Worry About Cheney's Silence

Congressional Republicans have to run for re-election. Vice President Cheney does not and that's got some lawmakers worried.

The Washington Post reports Cheney's failure so far to comment publicly on his accidental shooting of a hunting companion last weekend is giving even his closest political allies the shakes. Former G-O-P Congressman Vin Weber says Cheney's silence has "made it a much bigger issue than it needed to be."

And former House Republican leader Robert Michel says he's mystified that Cheney hasn't spoken up.

The Post reports some current and former White House officials say Cheney's refusal to address the issue could reinforce the image of a secretive White House that views itself as above the law.
