A memorial proposed for the Texas State Cemetery would bring recognition to a group of politicians some say have been overlooked. Austin resident Larry Thomas is working to place a memorial to the 52 black lawmakers who served in the Texas Legislature in the late 19th century.

The cemetery is the final resting place for some of the state's most revered citizens, including Stephen F Austin.

Cemetery superintendent Harry Bradley says the memorial would be appropriate because, in his words, "It would be significant in showing that the state cemetery is a cemetery for everyone."

Thomas says the state's only existing tribute to the legislators is a photo displayed in the Capitol Rotunda.

The committee that oversees the State Cemetery will consider the memorial at its March seventh meeting.
